  • What to do with all the shirts?

I have a very large number of t-shirts, from Defcon and other places, and nearly all of them are black. I used to buy at least one (or more) of the official shirts, and plenty of other shirts (if they were funny). I have shirts from companies that are long gone (and were free at the time). I'd say that I have close to 200 shirts that I just really no longer want or need.

See, the thing is, in the summer, I like to garden, and I'm not too particular what I wear, but for most of the year, black is bad (temps above 90 for weeks and weeks). Most of my shirts are the more generous sizes, and most of them have not been worn more than a few times (or at all). Some are from the early days of dc-shoot.

No, I'm not trying to sell them (although it would be kind of fun to auction off the more desirable ones for the EFF or other charity). They just really don't fit in with my lifestyle any more.

Why don't I just dump them off at a local charity? They're too specific, and I don't want to see a red pill shirt from Defcon 8 on the local homeless guy. There's a couple that I'm sentimental about, but mostly, I'd just as soon they were gone.

I'll probably be driving (because I avoid flying at almost any cost), and will almost certainly bring them (at worst, I can give them to a thrift store in Vegas).

Yeah, I know, it's weird, but that's me. Weird.

    Keep Them Safe:
You must keep these shirts. Keep them safe. I pack mine rolled up in milk crates in the closet. Warm, dry and away from critters. Another good option is vacuum pack them.
Either way you must keep them safe. These little shreds of cotton each have a story, and help to tell a bigger story about our community.

    WHY!
Because very soon, I'm going to start the Hacker Shirt Archive, in which I am going to ask you to mail me these shirts. At which point I will photograph each one in preparation of building a coffee table book of Hacker Shirts! If you want I can mail them back or I'll figure out a way to archive them for future generations!

Well, that's not going to happen. This sounds vaguely like you are suggesting you won't make it this year. I hope that's not the case. Some of the ones I have are less common, and a couple of them are genuine collector's items (such as the crazy one from (I think) summercon, with the sketch of the unabomber), but they are just in my way. Critters are unlikely (unless I find that the Rio is infested with *shudder* bed bugs).

Hopefully you'll just be there. I don't love anyone enough to mail them all those shirts (are you aware that would be on the order of a couple hundred dollars, at the cheapest?). It seems to me you've been attending defcon for a very long time. I doubt you'll see many surprises in what I have (but you never know).

If you are who I think you are, you have been attending def-con for a long time. This makes evident you have a LOT of shirts. Please, for the sake of our culture, give them to some one that could re-distribute them or save them for something.

1.If AgentX wants them perhaps he could pay for the shipping of them so he can have them for his project and Shrdlu can be rid of a clutter he does not want?

2.Simply saying zomgwtfculture but not making a tangible offer or solution doesnt help, either. Are you willing to toss in a few bucks, for example, to cover those aforementioned shipping fees?

Maybe someone can collect them at defcon in lieu of AgentX if he really isnt going this year. WTF man, really?

Nah, that'd be silly. BTW, the picture might be me when I was three years old, but it's me. Shrdlu == female. She, not he. Just saying.

I'm sure this will all turn out fine. The only down side I can see is that some people who come to defcon to *sell* shirts might sell one or two less. I'm not going to ship them. It isn't going to happen. I'm pretty fond of agentx, and I'm sure this will all turn out just fine. I'm thinking there will be a few (like some of the early dc-shoot shirts) that will be desirable, and a bunch that will head off to the local Goodwill.

As I'd said, I just don't want to see them on someone locally. It would be too weird. I don't want to know who shops at Goodwill, and I don't want to see my 3X nightgown (I'm not very big, so a 3X drowns me) stretched tight across the next People of Walmart poster child. Just saying.

heh, is that so? i always wondered if it was you or if it was a very young photo of $tween.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. Re: What to do with all the shirts?

I know the shirts don't fit into your lifestyle, and I know that black is not a great colour in areas which have high climates.

However, you say they have sentimental value, so maybe you should hold on to them... I have things that I've kept since I was a child, and I just cannot bring myself to let go of them, which is quite embarrassing, I know...

But really, if they have a lot of sentimental value, then you should really think through your decision and ask if you really want to 'give away' several years of work and commitment...

You're funny. I said I was keeping a couple that I felt sentimental about. Several years of work and commitment? A bunch of t-shirts? Somehow I'm having trouble even seeing that.

Defcon's my first stop; Goodwill's the second. As I'd initially said, the only reason I didn't just give them to the local places is that I live in an area small enough where I will then see them on people.

I don't suppose you have DC 5, 6 and 8 do you? I still have DC 1-4, 7, 9-18 but don't know what happened to those 3. ( I could also use a 9 and 10 in better shape than mine.) If you do and are willing to get rid of them let me know.

I have tons of them too. Barfing Yak Magazine, MOD vs LOD, and lots of other. Amazing how they stack up over the years. If you do PM me.

Yeah I remember you telling me about this. Let me know when. I would prefer to bring them to con and do it there. I'd rather not take a chance that they get lost somewhere in shipping.

I never use the PM system.

I almost certainly have all of those (I quit buying the official con shirt a few years ago, but I bought them religiously in the earlier years). On the other hand, it's either 5 or 6 that I liked, and will be keeping. Whichever year (I think it was 5) that they had two shirts, and one of them was world domination, and the other was the homage to Calvin Klein, are funny (and are also not size HUGE), and they're still in a drawer somewhere.

Everything that is going is already in one big box, including the Unabomber shirt from the truly early days. That one's still an attention getter, but it's too thin (white shirts that are thin would mean I'd need sunscreen on skin that otherwise never sees the light of day, thanks). No worries, though. I'll file away that you wanted them, and you can at least have two out of three for your collection.

Very cool. I'm ease to find at con I'm one of the dayshift Goons and am the one that wears the US Army web gear (hey it holds all the stuff a Goon needs). Tell you what if you were one of the folks who like to go to Quark's when it was open I am friends with the guy who was the head bartender (Darren) He is tending bar at another place not too far from the RIO (I think), I will take you over there and buy you a warp core breech if you are interested.

If you're a goon, then you probably already know me. Think Coffeewars. No thanks on the drink, though. I dislike crowds intensely, and will be spending as much time as possible away from them. One of the things I'm looking forward to most is the return of talks being piped into the rooms.

Understand. That is why I always stayed over at the Hilton once we went to the Riv. Gave me some quiet downtime.
