I would recommend this approach, as there is much more flexibility when speaking with a live person. or booking via the link on the DEFCON main page and then calling to make any changes you feel to be needed.

I have yet to actually get through to reservations via the phone. I now have a list of TEN phone numbers, and am beginning to consider staying at a quieter place, with a person on the other end of the phone. Before anyone who doesn't know me feels the need to ask whether I've done all the obvious things, I've even talked to Caesar's directly (the owners of the Rio, apparently), who forwarded me on to someone, who forwarded me on to the same non-working numbers.

By non-working I mean that after I get through with the instant-rage-making stupid system (where you have to talk to it, like that won't piss me off even more than pushing buttons), and finally get to the part where it's supposed to have a person on the other end, I get a recording that says that option's not available, or a fast busy, or any number of other things that makes me want to go with a more pleasant place.

Honestly, DT, I'm trying to support your preference for people making reservations within the block in order to keep costs down, but I'm close to giving up.

Why yes, I *do* need more coffee. How could you tell?

Sounds like the error I found when javascript is not enabled for the right sites:

When checking for room costs, it appears they require you have javascript enabled for the domain "totalrewards.com" or else you get this error:

Exceeded the maximum allowed bookable nights. The value was 22 but the maximum allowed is 11.

(Even if the number of days you specified is less than 11.)

I was able to duplicate this error, and then temporarily added "harrahs.com" to this list of javascript-ok sites, and the error went away. It may have been coincidence, as removing harrahs.com and resubmitting showed no such error, but caching being what it is, could be why it worked the next time even though I removed their site.

Also, you can try calling them on the phone, as that has worked when the website reservations failed.

I just reserved a room from Tuesday through Monday for $78 a night through priceline.com. Thank you, Shatner.

If you can book under the rate, please try to. I understand cash is tight, so do what is best.

Our over all costs at the hotel are heavily influenced by how many hotel room nights the group picks up.

Calling on the phone allows for Defcon rate and 2 Queen sized beds, even when the web-site with the Defcon rate only allows for king.

Well I went third party and for 6 nights saved plenty. The only time the "Defcon Rate" pays off is if you stay Friday and Saturday only.

Looks like its not offering 2 queen beds for that weekend with the defcon discount but for no or any other discount you can get it, i just also checked for people booking from wednesday - monday its cheaper to go with the 25% off discount as it gives you an avg night rate of 88.70 with a king and 96.70 with queen and the defcon rate is at avg of 104.20

it seems like there almost gouging with the defcon rate if you think your going to get put with defcon folks which is not the case as someone pointed out

Just got off the phone with the Rio. As far as the location within the hotel goes, no difference, there is no set block of rooms. The $50/night rate applies to a Deluxe suite with one king bed in the "Mountain View" section. The DEFCON rate however, can be applied to the same room with two queen beds and a first come first served section of the hotel (eg, strip view or mountain view). Both rates give you a 32" TV, floor to ceiling windows, a mini-bar, in-room safe, ironing board and hairdryer. Depending on when you arrive, you will be more likely to be roomed near other attendees if using the DEFCON rate. Looks like the difference is going to be the number of beds, and depending on when you get there a better(?) location within the hotel/view.

Should we call in our reservations then? The Rio site is showing that the only room with the "group rate" is just one king bed.
