Re: SMD projects
The HHV board last year was SMD-
I think it's great to get people over the fear of SMD...

Re: SMD projects
Yeah, pretty sure if I could steal your entire hackerspace and put it here in Orlando, I would. Jealousy, I have it. Looking forward to meeting up at the HHV, and thanks for the heads up!

Re: SMD projects
We're trying to bring as much gear as we possibly can
Power Strips
Soldering Irons 15-20 metcals , and maybe a few more
Hot plates
IR preheaters
Hot air guns
Solder paste
Solder flux
Solder
Microscopes
Tweezers
Compressor (don't worry its small and noiseless)
Paste dispenser
No schedule, just come as you are, we'll be in the HHV for the whole con, NSL also has a vendor table for kits.
Most of our kits can be built in under an hour by anyone.
there's a bunch of pics, videos and stuff on my flickr of our projects and our last hardware village

also our NSL flickr has a bunch too

Re: SMD projects
I definitely want in on this. Where and when will the schedule be posted/kits be available?
We're trying to start classes like this at FamiLAB, but I still need to learn SMD. Do we need to bring our gear, or will there be enough in the HHV?

But for the most part there will be NSL people just floating around helping out with whatever.

Re: SMD projects
nope, we had soldering newbs build a proxmark for their first project, the ADK is simpler than the proxmark

Re: SMD projects
I'm definitely interested in the beginner kit(s). The Android Open Accessory kit is intriguing too. I'd certainly consider it if the beginner kit went well for me. Would going from 0 soldering experience to the ADK kit in one weekend be a mistake?

Are you planning on teaching hand-soldering, or oven reflow? I'd be interested in both.

We covered SMD soldering with wire solder and hand iron. Paste with hand iron. Paste on hot plate.
Hot air rework. Drag soldering, point, wet, dry... all sorts of techniques.
People who had never soldered anything before walked away with fully functional midi powered synthesizers (The L1 badge).

We will be bringing 20+ metcal soldering stations, 3~4 hot air and 3 hot plates. Might throw an oven in there if we have space.
Will also have some microscopes so you can check your work.
It should be fun.

Re: SMD projects
We're teaching both hand soldering and hot plate reflow with paste and all that good stuff. So you're covered on both :)

SMD projects
Null Space Labs will be teaching some intro surface mount classes this year in the HHV.
With little kits like:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nullspacelabs/5326235003/
Its a little blinky and POV toy
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nullspa...n/photostream/
We are also considering some more advanced stuff.
But need an idea of how many people would be interested.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nullspa...n/photostream/
is the main board from
http://www.rt-net.jp/shop/index.php?...&products_id=1
It allows your android device to talk arduino using google's ADK.
Its kinda pricey at $80 in parts and will take someone of avg skill 2 hours to build... so its involved.
If you are interested let us know so we can get a feel for how many kits to make.
Cheers,
