Has anyone been successful in setting up Slack 8.0 or 8.1 with an Orinoco Gold and getting it to run in Monitor mode? Been playing with it quite a bit this evening...with no success..
Ok, here's the trick... we're using Slackware 8.1. Is that what you're using? I could use some serious help here. If I do a default load of SW 8.1, the Orinoco gold card seems to work fine, but won't go into monitor mode for kismet or airsnort. Doesn't even understand the command iwpriv eth0 monitor 2 1.
Default installs use pcmcia card services x.33. airsnort.shmoo.com shows a version x.34. What are you using? What did you have to upgrade? Did you use the diff patches?
Dude, I am so frustrated with this shit at this point I could scream.
Originally posted by skroo I'm actually using an Orinoco silver. Having said that, I haven't seen any problems under a 2.4.x kernel. What's it doing / what're you trying to do?

OK... It shouldn't make any real difference if you're using 8.0 or 8.1 as long as we're talking about the same kernel series here (which I'll assume to be 2.4, since that's what I'm running).

I'm using 3.1.26 under a 2.4.17 kernel on my laptop, the only PCMCIA-equipped machine I have. It's an 8.0 install with various kernel and executable updates applied over it.
Unfortunately, I'm going to be fucking useless at this point, because I have no idea what's wrong. Mine works. My best suggestions are really random stabs at the basics: are you running it as root/a suitably privileged user; does the card operate normally apart from monitor mode; is the kernel built with support for it? From what I remember (read: I'm bloody tired right now) of Slack's 2.4.18 kernel on the 8.1 distro, it doesn't have some PCMCIA NICs enabled by default in the makefile: the Orinoco may well be one of these. Been a while since had to build for one of those, too, so I may be totally off-base on this one.

I have to say... Getting wireless working under Linux has always been a pain in the ass for me too. Dunno why, since it should be fairly straightforward, but to get it doing everything I want has usually been combative.
I have never had a problem getting the card recognized, and if I don't use WEP I am fine. Ican assign an IP manually or pick one up DHCP. I have not been able to successfully get the card to communicate with my AP with 128 bit WEP enabled however.
Do you have to use the orinoco_cs instead of the wavelan_cs in order for WEP to work?
