Another idea came to me today: Since this is DEFCON 20 - Roman Numeral "XX", we could play off the meme of Dos Equis. "I don't always go FULL AUTO in the desert, but when I do it's at DEFCON XX" ...... "Stay frosty my friends"

Since the scoring rings have numbers in them, I wonder if we can put in "1%" somewhere somehow.

Going off this idea from seeess, I'll see if I can put something together with the Dos Equis guy within the next few days. Might be tough, getting it to look decent without being a full color photo (something that wouldn't work well on a shirt). Before I do that though, does anyone know of any legal problems with doing that? I mean it's just a picture of a guy w/ a parody slogan so I wouldn't think so, but sometimes stuff like that can be tricky. Also I guess I should ask if anyone else likes the idea. Don't want to waste a bunch of time if people hate it. Let me know.

Very nice, here are some ideas/thoughts

I would remove the "unofficial", that makes it sound like there is an official shoot and last year's shirt didn't say "unofficial"

I think he needs a left arm (on the right of the photo). Did you remove it so the pistol stands out more? see here

the "but when I do" is normally the start of the second part of the meme on the bottom (bottom right in this case) section.

I'd like to see the "full auto" get worked into the second half of the text but I don't have a recommendation on how to do that (and include the "defcon XX shoot las vegas nv july 26 2012")

Got a pretty decent set for the ten ring thought recently.



If anyone wants to take the time to clean up the color on the 9/10 rings and make the center more silkscreen friendly, or just wants to use this as a starting point, PM me for the original (big ass) image.

As for my input on the Dos Equis Guy design:
-put his other arm back in
-give his suit jacket the same grey outline as the gun, make background black. (how many of us wear white shirts regularly?)
-change the silenced handgun to a MAC-11, Micro Uzi or the like. (to fit the "full auto" statement.)
-Modify slogan to read something such as: "I don't always shoot in the desert... But when I do, I prefer full auto." to fill the top segment of the image
-In addition to the above, swap the "the DEFCON XX Unofficial Shoot" as a part of the statement for a logo, perhaps something such as:
"DEFCON
XX (large, red, and squat, to fill the same width and height as DEFCON)
SHOOT" also filling that same width. keeping it where it is, placing the dates under it
-Add to the bottom something to the effect of: "Stay loaded, my friends."
I can try to find the time to modify some of it myself if needed, but that's a scarce commodity these days. Side note, Dos Equis uses a disturbingly similar typeface to that of the Equate brand (font commercially available for a small license fee I'm not willing to pay.)

As for the legality of using the Dos Equis intellectual property, it should be fine, as it's clearly a parody, and using only enough of the original content to bring to mind the popular Dos Equis Commercials.* There are several court cases that have set precedence in favor of parody authors available with a quick Google search.

Addressing comments from the past 3 posts:

• Remove word unofficial - I will wait to hear from Deviant on this. It is called unofficial for a reason. I don't know why they do it that way but I don't want to call it something other than what it is.
• Left arm- The image that I borrowed from abruptly cut off his arm so I just kind of shaved it down. I'll try to find a way to add it back without it looking awkward.
• Wording & flow of the text- Honestly I don't think we can add "suppressed" without it looking too forced. Moving it to the bottom may be the "official meme" way to do things but it removes emphasis from the event name and personally I think it looks better as is. If we have anyone here who's an English major that wants to chime in I'm all ears.
• White on Black shirt- Yes I was thinking either a dark gray or black shirt. I will alter the image accordingly to look best on the background, but in these early phases of design we don't even know what colors the screen printer will offer. (Yeah, I know black and white are safe bets).
• Mac-11 / UZI- Post any silhouettes for other guns you have and I'll slap them in his hand. I think a Glock 18 would be cool too. I did locate a Mac-11 clip art I will be trying out tonight.
• Making the "XX" red- Screen printers typically charge by the color. This increased cost will directly translate to YOU, the buyer of the shirt. I'm not against it necessarily, but can we justify the expense?
• "Stay loaded" - See above. I think "Stay frosty" flows better, perhaps we can have a poll or something. I was considering placing this text on the front breast-area of the shirt with everything else on the back. What do you think?
• DT / Deviant's face- Not as recognizable. I think it would destroy the "meme" if people can't recognize the Dos Equis guy. We're already putting a gun in his hand.

The term "unofficial" is applied to any contests, event, party or social gathering that happens without official approval by Defcon goons that have historically authorized such contests, events, or parties. (People like Dark Tangent, Nikita, Russ, Pyr0, etc.) In short, "unofficial," events are not under the control of Defcon staff or goons. Most parties are unofficial, for example.

On the forums, I choose to include references to official and unofficial events so people looking for both official and unofficial defcon events can find them.

I can get you a high res photo of a mac10 but that might look a little boxy on this image. Can you find a mac11 with a different wireframe stock? I think the one you have pictured is less common, specifically talking about the portion that juts out under his left eye. If you can find one with a wireframe stock in this style I think it would look better

I like the "stay loaded" but you're doing all the work so I don't really care. Is there a more relevant image we can use on the front besides cross-hairs?

Agreed on the "suppressed" but I think a way to follow the meme better would be to put the location and date under the image. Then it could look something like this. (feel free to make suggestions, I don't really like the wording)
