  • little shops at the Rio for cigarrettes

i'm working on a little something for some friends at DEFCON this summer. can anyone with local knowledge (or, even better, actually the ability to put eyes on the layout at the Rio) look at this map...

    http://playbca.com/Portals/0/RIO%202...oFloorPlan.jpg

.. and tell me which of those shops sell cigarettes. Not being a smoker, i don't notice those things... but hopefully people can identify for me the places that do. Weren't there ABC stores or something in the Rio? I don't see them listed.

Also, i'm having a little trouble making heads or tails of the convention area of the map. Where is the "rotunda" area that has Reg? is it by numbers 29 and 30? Were those the doors where people would go outside to smoke often (and where the BCCC takes place?)
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I would say yes the rotunda is by numbers 29 and 30. I believe you are correct about where the doors are located as well. That map does not seem to scale very well with respect to the actual size and distance. I also believe there was a shop between 25 and 26, not sure what they sold. And there was a small business center near there as well. hope that helps.

I recall the "Rio Logo Gift Shop" (#8 on the map) sold cigarrettes last year, I do not smoke but I remember going there with a friend who bought cigarettes. I think that is their equivalent to the ABC store.

There was also a little sundries type place on the first floor of the masquerade village next to the masquerade tower elevators. I believe they had cigarettes, but it's not numbered on the map.

Agreed that gift shop (#8) is equivalent to the ABC store.

I called the Rio front desk to confirm whether any other location sold tobacco; the receptionist said that there was not. I do seem to remember cigarette girls, though.

For what it's worth - you can get a PDF of the same map from the Rio website. Unfortunately, it is still inaccurate in regard to size/distance/shape.

IIRC, the smoking area was just outside room #43. The DC19 venue page appears to confirm (this is a "better" map, but it depicts a much smaller area).

Cigarette prices at the Rio suck. If you have a car, a friend with a car or know someone who is going offsite, it's always good to ask them to get you a pack (or more likely a carton).

Many of us smokers do buy cartons of smokes before we leave and fly in with them.

The preferred "smoking area" was over where runnerup was talking about : http://defcon.stotan.org/faq/smoking-area.png

That brings back memories of standing there talking to flirzan and the Canadian guys from the 10,000¢ pyramid for hours.
