I can understand how FRS will be a bitch. Is there any info about what ham frequencies people will be on? I'll have my VX-5 with me. I think I read somewhere mentioning using an out of band frequency. I think it might have been the Deathrace 2k caravan.
I'm thinking we would want to be out of band anyway so we won't disrupt the local hams with our con chatter.

Christine:"What about everyone else?"
h4x0r:"go ahead and bring them along"

When boredom strikes, a simple scan and once finding a convo going on, just hopping in and start being one of the speakers is fun.
....Fun ice breakers...
Also sometimes just going to a random channel combo and keying up will usually bring a response from someone...
*key up*... "Howard is that you?"....
LOL Oingo Boingo...I can't say I'm sorry I missed that. Yeah it has always been a pain...the tourists seem to use more and more FRS radios every year, I had heard that the Hardrock had changed to about 5 dedicated narrow band fm freqs, but who knows. and of course like you say there are the 6k or so other radios from people at the con. But you have to admit it is highly enjoyable when you can see a tourist using one and you begin the long process of screwing with his head.

Yup. There's no point even *trying* to reserve a channel on FRS. If you're not getting bleedover from the strip, you'll be getting it from people at the Hard Rock, and if it's not coming from there it'll be from one of the 123,456,789 other radios in use at con.
Ah, how well I remember the fifty watts of 'manboobs' and 'blueberry clitoris' that characterised Defcon 8, followed by three hours of Oingo Boingo on FRS... *sniff* such happy times...

Usually these freq's are posted on some kind of public board, but I heard this year it will be a little more structured and should be better to do communications on what when and where.
between the defcon ppl, and the tourists it is a clear battle... it seems a lot of tourists never realized that someone else could listen in to their convos... or respond back... it is hella chaos on the frs for sure, especially if you are competing against someone who is stepping on you because they are using 5watts of joy... remids me of the cb days here... all those crazy mud ducks.
This is just a thought, but it might be a good idea to post which FRS channel everyone intends to opperate on. I know that from my own past experience it was a pain in the ass trying to find a relatively clear channel to communicate with my group in past years. By no means would something like this mean that said channels are off limits to others or that by reserving one you would attain some kind of security (a laughable idea with FRS). However to add some kind of informal organization I think it might help everyone. Plus it would let other board members traveling in their own groups know which channel to shout at to get ahold of another board member...again just a thought.
