    Re: 100 days to go...

just an update... we now have 23 people officially registered and i suspect more will come along soon enough. the registrations are picking up somewhat.

as far as Lanes go... we're a little un-balanced at the moment. Wednesday's second session is currently seeing 9 lanes reserved. the other sessions have an average of 5 lanes reserved. So currently i'm capping the lanes at 10, and we'll see how things flesh out. if we max a registration of 10 lanes for all sessions before June, i may bump it up a little more, we'll see.

    just keeping folk informed.

If you have NEVER shot a gun before there is nothing wrong with that, but please let folks know. There are plenty of folks who are firearms experts or instructors, or just really nice people who are happy to teach others. Now is the time to go to the NRA web page and google some other basic gun laws (treat all guns like loaded guns, etc). Plan ahead and have fun!

    Thank you Deviant, TheCotman. :)

I have read the Defcon shoot page, quite a few times actually and read threads about past ones here and there..

The discounted price would be nice, I assume this is ref to the orientation/getting a badge.

I do understand everyone wont be willing to let others shoot their guns, and I totally understand why people would insist on their own ammo they are sure about. I would assume and practically force anyone willing to let me shoot theirs, to accept some compensation, cash or otherwise.. I have a distant acquaintance that I think they mentioned they would be an RSO and possibly sell ammo for bitcoin, I thought that was clever idea, and something I would love to do. Keeping in mind cell service is sketchy at best out there.. Im hoping to meet this individual when im there. :)

And knowing the cab is pretty much out of the question is good, but sucks.. , I hate to leave things to chance and someones generosity. I will be sure to somehow find a ride, its nice to know there are a few options :) I would deff make it worth someones while. Im expecting to attend the thurs. morn shoot.

Im a sane mature individual, whose only craziness would be considered riding motorcycles amungst the crazy drivers out there. :)

I appreciate the detailed responses, any and all info you have for me is great! I would encourage it actually.. Im all ears..

Thanks guys, already got a great vibe from you already, this will be my first DefCon for me, and second for my buddy, we are looking forward to it, and I have little idea what to expect, but I know this will be fun weekend I will remember. :)

Has been open to sane and safe people willing to respect each other and firearms.

Many people share use of their weapon(s), but each person is different and some may choose not to share, or maybe ask for some compensation for the rounds fired. Some won't let you provide your own ammo, but insist on using their own, ammo. Some may invite you to shoot their weapons without charging you, but even if people offer to let you shoot for free, it would be good to recognize their kindness by at least offering them something... maybe food, or money, or some sort of trinket or something.

As for protocol, each person is different and may have their own protocol. There would be an assumption, that if you do not have a table/lane because you do not have a weapon, that someone with a weapon will also have a lane and table.

I've found very little info on newbs like me attending.. :)
This site is linked from the description for this forum for the Defcon Shoot:
    http://www.deviating.net/firearms/defcon_shoot

Have you visited that for more information?

And also this is 45 mins from the strip, is getting a cab there and back possible ? or a ridiculous idea ?
A Taxi to and from would cost a great deal of money. Last year, the, "[forum=632]HackBus[/forum]" (forum) not only provided bus service to/from San Francisco for a lucky few, but also was willing to provide service to the Toxic BBQ (did not happen last year, but they did provide service previous years when there were Toxic BBQ.) I think 2 years in a row, they provided bus service (one trip) to and from the Defcon Shoot. They will have their own requirements on how they select passengers. Websites: http://www.hackbus.net/ , http://www.hackbus.com/ , https://twitter.com/HackBus , http://www.facebook.com/HackBus , http://www.hackb.us/

Beyond HackBus, some people rent cars and are willing to offer people seat space to and from the shoot. If you plan on doing the camping thing that people are talking about, you would likely want to make arrangements ahead of time. Also, I've not heard if HackBus plans to provide service on both days, or just one, assuming they would return to service again this year.

I would gladly pay someone to fill their tank for a ride there and back for me and buddy.
This is a really good attitude.

Also, having no guns, would I be expected to rent a lane ? Im guessing not, but truthfully I dont know..
Probably not. I think the only people renting a lane last year had weapons.

Without experience, you should become familiar with the 4 basic rules of firearm safety... they are something like:
    * Assume a gun is always loaded
    * Keep your hand off the trigger until you are ready to fire
    * Only point your gun at what you want destroyed
    * You are responsible for any items behind your intended target (bullets can travel through objects and harm things behind the target.)

There are other items with respect to safety, and they have historically been covered at the site like:
    * How do you identify a RSO
    * What is a RSO
    * How is a cease fire called?
    * Who can call one?
    * What does it mean when a lane/field/range is hot?
    * What should you do/not do when a cease fire has been called?
    * (more)

Deviant will have real answers. All of these answers are based on observation.

you are not expected to rent a lane. you would have to register and have a badge, however.

and we even have a special category of registration for people like you... discounted price for people coming from countries where guns aren't so easy to get and/or carry! ;-)

well, most folk are friendly. people who let you try their guns do often like you to buy ammo or contribute for the use of their ammo. we're looking to make little signs or banners or something that people can hang in their lanes if they are welcoming guest shooters.

a cab would not really be possible. maybe they would take you to the fork off to Lovell Canyon Road (even that is a huge, expensive fare) but not many cabs would come all the way up to the shoot site.

getting a ride with folk who are going is a much better plan. there is usually a thread started about this as DEFCON gets closer.

Im a green horn, going to Def Con with a buddy of mine.

We are interested in attending this event, I personally don't have any experience with guns other than air rifles and the such.

Here's your end-of-April status update, if you're curious...

    11 registrations thus far
    4 RSO volunteers
    4 staff volunteers

an average of 3 lanes are reserved in each session across both days.

this will be a MUCH smaller event than last year's unless numbers pick up. i'm not worried, last year we didn't even START taking registrations until the start of June. still, just wanted people to know how things are looking thus far.

I just registered 3 shooters and a lane on Wednesday and Thursday. I hope that helps with the planning. I may get an additional lane later if they don't fill up.

Hey Deviant, Seeess and I may buy a pair of lanes like we did last time, pair up and train the newbies and all. I need to wait unti the end of this week though to see if I get to shoot guns in the Vegas desert this year or another desert, sigh.

    Re: 100 days to go...

i am definitely going to have the schedules padded in such a way that there is a considerable break between Session One and Session Two each day. I'm thinking...

    Wednesday Dusk

15:00 to 16:00 - tables and tents delivered and erected

    16:30 to 17:00 - check-in and safety talk
    17:00 to 17:30 - group #1 set up
    17:30 to 18:30 - group #1 shoot
    18:30 to 19:00 - group #2 set up
    19:00 to 20:00 - group #2 shoot

    Thursday Dawn
    09:00 to 09:30 - check-in and safety talk
    09:30 to 10:00 - group #1 set up
    10:00 to 11:00 - group #1 shoot
    11:00 to 11:30 - group #2 set up
    11:30 to 12:30 - group #2 shoot

13:00 to 14:00 - table and tent strike and load-out

Deviant, have you had a chance to think about this more?
Oh and do you accept bitcoin :)

I just sent you a considerable chunk of money. Hope it helps with the planning and all. Thanks again for doing this for everyone. I know from experience how much it sucks to be organizing these kinds of events.
