  • DC21 Custom Playing Cards

To avoid derailing the tshirt thread as suggested by Modafinil and Bbox

background discussion here. Current thoughts revolve around passing them out and seeing who can re-collect a whole deck, and using the solitaire cipher. Also coming up with 52 notable faces / events / items to place on the cards would be needed.

Looking at the first page of google results it looks like a two sided custom printed deck runs around $6.50 per deck with a quantity of 50 (no setup costs mentioned for one company)

    example 1, example 2

52 famous Defcon events? Easy! I think we have 52 events at any given Defcon. 52 people we should know? Also very easy.

    52 events
    ----------
    Satellite dish in elevator....

    52 people
    ----------
    Dark Tangent
    Noid
    Priest
    Peter Shipley
    Robert Morris
    Flea
    Pool2Girl
    Moxie Marlinspike
    Deviant Ollam
    Major Malfunction....

List a bunch and put them to a vote.

I believe that it is possible to bring the cost down if we are serious about doing this with real cards. We could also do this low tech and design cards and print them ourselves on card stock just for fun.

My thought about the real cards was to figure out what it would cost and then get X amount of events involved that wanted to do this.
so as an example if we had 13 events/groups that were interested each group would have their image/logo/saying/etc.. on 4 cards in the deck. if we printed only 50 decks each of the 13 events would get their 200 cards to give away however they see fit. (contest prizes, thank you, etc..) This could make a fun game of people trying to collect a full set. (Maybe put a set together for a charity donation.) You get the jist.

if it cost 300 dollars for the 50 decks each event would have to come up with 23 dollars.

obviously if less were involved it would cost more or if the people involved wanted to print up more decks it would alter the price.

The cost would also depend on what we want to customize. we could have standard card fronts and just modify the backs with the events specific stuff or we could put images with the card designation on the fronts of different people like TheCotman
(just kidding boss, I know you would never want that, but maybe just one of your avatars and handle :) )

But people like DT, Major Malfunction, Noid, etc.. (however they may not like their pics being distributed so that may be a problem)

Lots of things to discuss if people are serious. I believe I can get participation and funding for 2 or maybe 3 events I am somewhat involved in, so if others are interested and either they speak up or we want to try to contact a few other event organizers we should talk more seriously.

Obviously the more serious we are about this we would need to get a hold of the people we wanted to print and make sure they are kool with it. The whole idea of a small limited run of cards is good. I dont mind fronting a little money in this. Though i am far from an artist maybe rough sketches at most.

Thank you for this. As a participant at the Shoots, I've been surprised with the amount of people that don't want their picture taken. I'd be surprised if the people we find "popular" enough within our circles feels the same way, we need to make sure they're comfortable with their likeness being used in this way.

If they're not, then there is the option of distributing two of them as "Joker" cards, with no picture and only their name and highlights/accomplishments/description of activities.

            Re: DC21 Custom Playing Cards

I spent some time looking into this a bit deeper and asking some questions to some with more experience. I think it's a good idea but we have lots of things that will take us plenty of time if we are to do this correctly.

I am sure everyone would agree we would rather do this right then to rush and do something junky.

I will work on getting more specifics and report back. I figure worst case scenario we find out all the info and we can do leg work at the con this year to get good pics and others involved and have it ready to do really well for Defcon 22.

So in the meantime let's get back to putting designs together to discuss for the T-shirt.

I was also thinking a lot of the other events will be playing with the 21 blackjack theme, I think we should try and come up with something totally different and unique. I love my DC19 TSA shoot shirt and get the best comments when I wear it, it was super unique and really represented the DC shoot well.

Let's come up with something really great!

              Re: DC21 Custom Playing Cards

I'd like to see this become a defcon shoot deck because it will get more people interested in the shoot. Side story: during the closing when they showed a few pictures of people with guns and I heard a few comments "where is that at?" a few rows back

But... if this becomes too much work or something, I bet the standard defcon swag might want to put out their own deck. Something would be better than nothing.

                Re: DC21 Custom Playing Cards

To be honest at the present time i'm already loaded with enough work and im working on my own little special thing for defcon this year. And at the time we still haven't decided on a shirt for the shoot. I think we would be better off focusing on what the main thing the shoot puts out is the awesome shirts. Then say once we have the shirts decided on organized and going to printers work on added swag outside of the norm. This is why i think bbox idea to do it right is what is needed. We can take this year at defcon to get the right pictures that capture the various events. Hell make it some sort of contest for the photographers of con to capture that perfect image. Take all those photos and pick one for each part of what makes the con, make a deck for 22.

                  Re: DC21 Custom Playing Cards

If the cards don't take off on their own this year, we could simply print the DC Shoot Shirt art onto a deck of cards as a placeholder.

BTW, I'm following the tread and love the playing card idea, but I'm focused on the shirts. If the cards need funding, let me know - I can help with that.

Sorry for the blatant self promotion, I just wanted to throw out that when not vending at DC (Shadowvex Industries), we are busy running our own digital print company. We specialize in short-run and variable data color output. Once you get the details/artwork finalized, we would be happy to work with you in getting these printed up.

Thanks! Do you foresee any issues with printing playing-card type cards, with the same size/feel? Any minimum orders?

Was reading this and was thinking about doing this for the coming years DC23. I saw that a lot of the prices have gone down on this and there are more companies that do it. I noticed that www.customizedplayingcards.com did this for a lot cheaper. any thoughts?

What do you mean you *notice* that site did this for a lot cheaper? Your username is "qpc" and that site is called Quality Playing Cards. You could just come out and say that your site could offer services. Also this thread should probably be locked due to age.

Yep, thanks for noticing. The post you replied to is probably spam. DT asked me to disable the "forced lurking period" for new users, and see how bad the spam problem might be. Though it is trouble for spammers, it is a big turn-off to would-be new users.

Closed this thread though -- good idea.
