    Re: Wireless Pentathlon

    Pentathlon

Think you have a well rounded background in Wireless then the Wireless Pentathlon may just be the contest for you. There will be five, thus the name, components to the contest.

    Long Distance Signal Strength
    Hide and Seek
    WPA2 Password Cracking
    Fox and Hound
    System Takeover

    The Rules:

In order to score you must register
Instruction cards will be provided for all entrants
Teams can be no larger than 3 participants
It is ok to ask questions, don’t be TOO scared to ask
When the village is closed all access points will be off

    The Breakdown:

The contest is broken into 5 distinct parts, some parts will provide information for the next challenge, others are independent. The following are the contests and what to prep for.

    Day 1 – 1/2 day
Clean signal strength Shootout- “Run-what-ya-brung” best rig wins (rig is computer, radio, antenna, no external amps allowed). The network information will be handed to each contestant on a sheet of paper at registration and the network band will be provided at that time as well. The contest will be setup indoors so prepare for a hostile environment the Defcon RF space is very congested. We have built a script to test for the lowest “jitter” reading. Lowest score wins. There will be 3 readings once connected to the AP. The top places will be scored, and this will set the leader board this contest is worth 25 points to the winner, 24 for second place… etc.

    Day 1 – 1/2 day and 1/2 of Day 2
Hide and seek – there will be 1 AP hidden in the conference area once each competitor finds it they will navigate to a website on the network and get the next clue and get their flag, first 25 places are scored just like the shoot out.

Day 2 till the end of con
WPA2 cracking – an AP placed in the wireless village will be the target, there will be clues and information on the portal after the 2nd challenge, once on the network by any means necessary, navigate to the web site and the flag will be captured, this is a timed event. First to crack the key gets 25 points and so on till all contestants have loaded their keys.

    Day 2 till the end
Fox and hound – we can’t break tradition. There will be a roving network within the conference area and that person or thing must be found, once they are approached they will be given a serialized code that will be uploaded to the scoring server as the flag. First to find the fox will get 25 points and this will be scored to 25 places as well.

    Day 2 till the end
System takeover – This is a true pen test challenge, the contestants need to break into a system on a protected wireless network and traverse the network. There will be clues for this contest but the first to get root wins, offense and defense is allowed. This will test the true pentester/attacker. Wireless will get you in and score points but your overall skills will help you score big, obtaining the root flag on the network will be worth 110 points and there will be several mini challenges along the way to score additional points.

Schedule can be found on the wireless village website HERE

Additional details will be forthcoming as we get closer to the con but put on your thinking caps and think about how creative some contest behind those five areas could be and what skills you need to bring to win one segment of all.
