    Re: WIINERS CIRCLE ANNOUNCEMENT!

That is really too bad. Most DEFCON 21 attendees don't even know there was a Short Story Contest (everyone I mentioned it to said they never heard of it). This year in the closing ceremonies they merely listed the winners of some contests, which didn't take much time - why cant this contest winners be listed on the screen for a brief mention, will take 30 seconds? And please also in the Program? Otherwise it will be an invisible contest.

    ANNOUNCEMENT, IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

"We will be putting ALL of the short story entries on the Conference DVD and we will be listing the winners in the Conference program in a short blurb, letting everyone know they can check the forums and dvd to read more.
The winners will get recognition in the printed program, there will be no event at DEFCON Closing Ceremony. "

I have today received an email from a Senior member of DefCon staff with sad news. Due to a series of unfortunate events, I am told, none of the winning short stories will be featured in the printed schedule.

This was NOT due to the material missing a printing deadline but simply to a mistake made somewhere along the line in the "back of house" of DefCon.

HOWEVER: ALL STORIES ARE AVAILABLE ON THE CONFERENCE DVD AS PROMISED.

This has zero effect on any arrangements made for winning badges.

On behalf of the Short Story Contest this year, I would like to apologize for the appalling number of little mistakes along the way that made this a rough road for everyone and promise that should the contest return, it will be much better managed next time!!

Emails have been sent to all three winners with further instructions regarding claiming your prizes! Please respond promptly. If arrangements, as noted in the email, are not made prior to arriving at DEFCON you run the risk of not receiving your badges. Thank you!

Thanks so much for wading through of the stories. I read them all, and it took me a LONG time. So I know that you spent a considerable effort on this contest, Eris (and other judges)! What impressed me most were the different technologies our kids can expect us to develop in the next 20 years. Everything from brain implants to holo-fashions.

Take a bow, ma'am. You deserve the applause.

This year was full of so many well written and intriguing stories it was very difficult to narrow down to only two winners. If I do this again next year, and we get so many awesome stories again, I may have to consider a third place winner as well. Not that narrowing 18 down to 3 would have been any easier!

I learned a lot from my little mistakes this year. If this contest returns I think I could do it without screwing up. Much.

Thank you for your support, your words are kind.

    WIINERS CIRCLE ANNOUNCEMENT!

Yes, the polls closed early, as the time was set by me, across the International Date Line, where I live. No,that isn't midnight June 10, in the US. I too have deadlines to meet to get the stories published and those deadliines are in the US. I should have made that more clear, I agree. I apologize to anyone that may have missed out on the chance to vote in the ten days that was provided because the poll closed some hours in advance of US midnight. This is a wrinkle that will be ironed out next year. Among many others that occurred this year as well. Volunteers like myself don't always do things the right way the first time. It is a learning process for us as much as it is for participants.

On to the good news, Teh Winnars!

FIRST PLACE:The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything, by Lizz

Congratulations, you have won one free entry/badge to DEFCON 21!

And of course, We will be putting ALL of the short story entries on the Conference DVD and we will be listing the winners in the Conference program in a short blurb, letting everyone know they can check the forums and dvd to read more.

Please note, and remember, this is not a contest that will be involved in the closing ceremonies at the con.
Collection of your badges at registration with the schedule and dvd is completion of the final act of the contest.
WINNERS, I will be contacting you via email with badge retention instructions as soon as I get confirmation on who/when/where.
    .

A great big thank you to everyone who submitted, to everyone who voted and to everyone who helped me along the way with the issues I was able to resolve.

A huge thank you for reading so many stories to DaKahuna, already so busy with Wireless Village duties, and to The HighWizard, also already so busy with DC 101 duties. It is hard enough making such large events happen will all volunteers, but to add in the time consuming duty of reading, and evaluating, so many great tales, I just can't thank you enough!
