Re: Event:T echnician Class Question and Answer Pool Review
What: Amateur Radio Exams for all license classes (Technician, General and Extra)
When: Sunday August 4th, 2013 noon - 3 PM
Where: Palma G&G (unless changed by Defcon staff)
Cost: $15.00
Come to Palma G&H on Sunday between 12pm and 3pm, where we'll be giving ham radio license examinations so that you, too, can (legally!) use 15,000 times normal WiFi power, read RFID tags from half a mile away, talk to satellites, and bounce signals off incoming asteroids. (Yes, we actually do that.) The FCC makes us charge $15 for this (we don't keep any of it), but we'll take cash or a check; that fee covers your first 10 years of amateur license registration, as well as the ability to take the exams once for all three license classes: Technician, General, or Amateur Extra. Go home with a better memento of DEF CON than just a hangover and a pile of t-shirts!
Technician Class: With a Technician Class license, you will have all ham radio privileges above 30 MHz. These privileges include the very popular 2-meter band. Many Technician licensees enjoy using small (2 meter) hand-held radios to stay in touch with other hams in their area. Technicians may operate FM voice, digital packet (computers), television, single-sideband voice and several other interesting modes. You can even make international radio contacts via satellites, using relatively simple station equipment. Technician licensees now also have additional privileges on certain HF frequencies. Technicians may also operate on the 80, 40 and 15 meter bands using CW, and on the 10 meter band using CW, voice and digital modes.
General Class: The General Class is a giant step up in operating privileges. The high-power HF privileges granted to General licensees allow for cross-country and worldwide communication. In addition to the Technician privileges, General Class operators are authorized to operate on any frequency in the 160, 30, 17, 12 and 10 meter bands. They may also use significant segments of the 80, 40, 20 and 15 meter bands.
Extra Class: The HF bands can be awfully crowded, particularly at the top of the solar cycle. Once one earns HF privileges, one may quickly yearn for more room. The Extra Class license is the answer. Extra Class licensees are authorized to operate on all frequencies allocated to the Amateur Service.

Also, here's the public posting of the exam session on the ARRL's site: http://www.arrl.org/exam_sessions/la...-nv-89103-4043 Looks like Sunday at Noon, in or near the Wireless Village room(s).
If you're planning on taking a test, reviewing the ARRL's "what to bring to an exam session" might be helpful: http://www.arrl.org/what-to-bring-to-an-exam-session
I expect more detail and confirmation will be posted in this thread and/or the Amateur Radio thread as the date approaches.
