  • Just wondering...

What is the situation of any Mac users at other meetings? In SLC, we've been lovingly dubbed the "Mac Whores". The other meeting attendees like to bust our balls every now and then about our silly devotion to our Macs.

Is this how it is at your meeting?

At our IVU meetings there are a lot of mac users, in fact due to the meetings and the people I have come to have a better understanding of Macs (even though was I once in a situation for a period of time where I had to support/troubleshoot/fix apples/macs) than what I had previously experienced from various classes involving legacy models. Hell, I have even been considering about getting a mac-laptop just to play with... I doubt i will ever switch but I no longer feel the disdain that once ran through my veins... the people on the other hand...

      Mac Users

We've actually got a pretty strong Mac contingent in L.A. - definitely a minority, but present. Most of us are crossover users in the sense that we use whatever platform is most suitable.

And I'm the oddball of the group - no G3s, working on a 68K port of Slackware (sorta), and most of my PPC-era hardware is tied up in either BeBoxes or RS/6000s.

Macs would be quite a bit better if Apple wasn't the only game in town to buy from. Can anybody say Monopoly?

how could anyone forget umax... they were gonna revolutionize the world with mac clones. I think my old workplace had even bought a bunch

I would seriously go out an buy an ibook if it weren't 3k. All my tech friends would shoot me for admitting it too
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Sad for me to say, but I own a couple PowerPCs. I think that was a great move by Apple because their OS would be more prevelent and people would not have to worry about being the only poor guy with a MAC, but I think they quickly realized that they were losing business because there was now competition.

I own a few Macintosh computers. I parted with my first computer a while ago by donating it to my little brother. He then had the house raided and the computer confiscated for some time. Its back home now with him. In the NVU meetings there were also a large majority of Mac people also. IVU does have quiet a few Mac people at it (: Imma get bw to switch someday, actually i feel him switching on his own without my help :)

I too am in the SLC with ya - I am a closet mac-whore myself. I support them at work - too poor to own one though. Just know your not alone.

I like to show people this article too:

personally I have known more gay mac owners and gay pc owners and always thought this was the national trend.
The articles "Are Mac users smarter? " does not mention what it defines as smarter though it enforces that mac owners are more likely to have a strong education and more buying power than those who are not mac owners. In the end, I bet there are more gay mac owners than "smarter" mac owners...

                            The article points out:

Mac users (all 7-12% of them, depending on the research you believe) are more likely to be more educated.. not necessary more capable with the computer.

This 'smartness' is actually measured by how long they have been online (5 years, wtf?), how likely they are to make shitty useless webpages that can barely be viewed without seizing, and how much or how likely they buy stuff online.

The research group then proceeded to cream out that this makes this demographic exceptionally perfect to spam and ream up the ass with advertisements that cause them to spend money... (or did I read that quote right?)

Mac users are more likely to have money, as the systems cost considerably more. (which could lead some to wonder about how much the 'smartness' transfers into finances).. but other things come into play when more money is involved, like better schooling, etc.. (but not always! this was a nasty random generalization)

People that use Macs are more likely to surf the web with them.. which means all those other PCs not surfing the web and buying stuff online... they must not be hooked up with the aol yet right?

                            --
Okay... this post can be deleted at any time... I just needed to rant about how stupid the research/article was and how flawed their findings were in the way they used them. Mac users are good folk. I would own one myself if I could afford an ibook
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.
