Do any of you ever go to a night club where they have dancing? It can be line dancing, swing dancing, you name it. Well before the crowds show up at 9pm they have dance classes around 6pm. Get there early for a few nights in a row and eventually you wil be one of the dancers having fun.

It should be the same here. Heck have beginner computer classes even, well maybe not digress that far. We have to learn from somewhere, and I'd rather learn from Defcon. Learn something and apply it for a full year. Make your own CTF server. Hack on it for a year, then give it a go at the next Defcon.

I agree. I am all about the knowledge, but if I don't have a basic foundation to build on, I become uninterested, and usually leave.

folks regionally should get together that are interested in doing this so that they can get a feel not only for going on the attack/defense, but so that they can learn how to work under the pressure of all the folks watching. Never actually participated in the ctf, but I'm always gawking at what folks in the area are doing there and it can be hard as hell to keep your concentration there.

that, and it's an excuse to hook up before the dc11. I'd be down for a weekend of that in California. sort of like the forums jeopordy team thingy. did that ever pan out?

*Nod* I like that idea as well.. maybe some live hacking demos. Anyone want to show off those 31337 skillz before a live audience?

Although a live pic exchange would be likely to be an irresistable target, I like the idea...

I was rather sorry last year that the tracks weren't newbie/advanced/uberleet. It left me guessing, and I often guessed wrong.

I've never been able to make it to defcon yet (this year looks promising though) and I like the sounds of a more informal CTF. I might meet up with one or two other people I know there but it wouldn't be enough to be a real team nor would I really have the cofidence for that initially. A little network for a pickup game of CTF could be really fun though I think. No scoring, just play around, learn from each other, etc.

                    learning

I like the ctf idea, and the learn how to do a ctf. And it would be nice to bring back the tracks of /n00b/hacker/uberl337 because last year, i think once or twice i went to some talks that i was like....uhhhhhhh yeah...what?

Another thing is that we need either a.) better air conditioning or b.) different rooms. I think i almost passed out a couple times in the talks, because alot of the ones i saw, where on the roof, and it was hot as fuck, and coming from colorado, it killed me,and i couldnt concentrate on the talks with the damn heat. So I dont know what can be done, its just, i missed out on alot of talks because i didnt want to become the suns bitch for an hour.

The tents were better at DC10 than any previous, but that roof tent is still th worst.

Somehow I'm guessing that won't be a problem this year. I still think blackwave's Hug-a-Goon campaign is commendable.
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

I don't think we have to worry about a tent problem this year...

I agree that some sort of informatl CTF for newbies would be awesome and fun and a learning experiene at the sametime, and would help a newbie understand what is going on with the real CTF.
