  • DEFCON 11 Pre-Planning

Ok ok so I'm starting this planning thing a little early so what this is my 7th Defcon I'm allowed to. My little group and I are working on a couple different games and or events for this years defcon.

Here are just a couple of our ideas:

    1. Public knowlage server (slap it on the network for use in sharing notes and whatever else comes to mind.)

    2. Unoffical-CTF (Besides the CTF the On the rest of the defcon network theres somuch action going on why not have some games and compitions to go with it)

    3. Booze Hound (You and your team score as much alcohol as you possibly can without buying any of it. This is going to be a bit tough to define the rules for.)

    4. ???

Tell me what you guys think of these, any ideas to improve or add on to these would be cool.

I'm not sure that having a public server available to the masses wouldn't already be another CTF. You're just asking for trouble here. Just my 2 cents.

    2. Unoffical-CTF (Besides the CTF the On the rest of the defcon network theres somuch action going on why not have some games and compitions to go with it)

This isn't such a bad idea. Actually, I'd like to see a poolside CTF for the masses. Not really much scoring going on, just a bunch of people trying to hack each other.

No way. Too much liability. Too many underage drinkers at Defcon. Sounds cool, but would need at least a totally college crowd to pull this one off.

We already have the Note Exchange. I know it wasn't working last year, but hopefully Boogah will work out all the bugs before DC11. http://noteex.hatesville.com/

I agree with Russ, this sounds like a good idea. Something people can hack away on just for kicks, not for competition.

Don't we have enough drinking games?

      4. ???

Yes, I dig question marks. Anything that involves question marks is okay inmy book.

Last year I looked for a server but kept getting hacked while on the net. Of course having a PC named HACK-ME was not too smart. I would like to see a server when I can copy over my pictures and trade with foilks while still at the con and not wait months for them to get their tail in gear back at home.

I would like to see a step-by-step CTF for us beginnners, sort of the bunny slopes of CTF. Teach us!

Hmmm how would this be verified? Maybe get points for donating alcohol to a goon.

A live picture exchange would be a cool addition to the notes exchange... but probably a little impractical; considering that a lot of people have a difficult enough time taking pics and offloading them for others to view weeks to months post-dc.

I had actually thought about trying to make a forum team, or a newb team for CTF, as I am still quite lame at it myself.... but figured it would not be that popular (forum members, correct me if I'm wrong!). If a lightweight division of CTF were held, I could only wish the Ghetto Hackers would take it under their wing or give out hints and tips to those that would, as they did an awesome job with CTF last year.
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Goons do not take donations of alcohol. We rob and steal plenty without taking charity.

Actually, quite a few goons got drunk due to the Scavenger Hunt.

Hmmm, this is a GREAT idea. I wonder who we could get to run this thing. Talk about bringing back the "learning" into DefCon. Let me toss this out to the list and see what pops up.

ASTcell, you rock! This would be sooooo great! If something like this were to take place I would crawl to defcon! I want to learn! I WANT to LEARN!!:)

You guys are way cool and know so much I really would like to meet you there but the bottom line for me is learning. I'll be there with a composition book a couple of pencils and a highlighter.

I think this defcon should be brought back to learning also. The con for me has been a combo of learning and scene whores....less scene whores and more con would benefit us all. Also, the talks might want to deal with some basics for the n00bs that aren't script kiddies.

I disagree... if a talk is completely over my head, I'm much more likely to sit there and try to understand or take in the topic at hand. If there is too much that I already know.. I drone out and forget most of what is talked about

For a noob CTF, it might be easier to limit it to a one day thing.. (take less attendee commitment, plus take less commitment from the ones willing to help run it. Ideally, each team would have a mentor, who would not do any of the competing, but would serve as a resource / teacher / hints, tips, and tricks person to those in the middle of competition... a completely practical exercise, if you will.

It didn't seem that difficult avoiding being hacked on the network last year. Sniffing was abundant.. but there was a wall of shame for good reason. Although, I thought I was fucked for sure when the DNS hack occurred.
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

I'm just adding my voice of support to this one. Be sure to list assumed knowledge and what is off-limits or frowned upon. I would so attend that, just tell me when it is!

This may be unpopular, but if something was *completely* over my head, I left and did something better with my time. To be fair, there was only one talk I walked out on for this reason. I don't have a large enough knowledge base yet to be able to figure out something I know zero about when I am being talked to 10ft over my head.

I'm not saying all the talks should be scaled down, just a few extra that would cover the basics......as for the completly over your head, that's what defcon is about...not to be completly over your head..but to be over it just enough to learn and expand your knowledge to things you wouldn't have known otherwise.
