Well, look at it this way. The OEM OS was ME, and that blows steaming gas, so that had to go.

I upgraded to XP so i could use the Maya demo, and because i hated the crashig.

XP has some great features, and it seems to be quite stable. Security needs work, but hell, its Windows.

Im not gonna downgrade after i spent the hundo to get my XP.

    That is all.........

You were kind of making sense and I was beginning to see your view point(except I never called Microsoft)....and then you suggested switching to 98 instead of using XP.....oooo....the horror

I have a Dell 8100, 512, 1.5, XP upgraded from ME. All the sudden, (no problems for like 5 months) when i reboot, it gets to the "XP scandisk", and wheather you let it check the disk or cancel, it reboots right after that! Im confused! So, i called a place and they said possibly to defrag it? Oh, Hard drive = 100GB. Anyhow, i havent done that, but any ideas? Problems? Motherboard and hardware aspect is fine, ive run a diagnostic.

    Recovery Console?

I donno, just help me please!

A friend had an XP error, I ran the scandisk at reboot, it went fine until 57%, and it took about half an hour to get to 58%, then it shot through to 100% and was fine after that. Don't reboot the machine while it is working!

If you have something hacked in your system you can also go to www.bootdisk.com and create a new boot disk to start fresh and check out your hard disk from there.

I really think this is just a hard disk issue as I described above... Windows has a knack of going unconditionally into scandisk when there are bad clusters on the disk.

this is not in relation to your problem, but something else people should be on the lookout for.
I have a bunch of drives around 60-80 GB in my system booting XP. all of the sudden one day XP starts taking like 5 minutes to boot. bad considering I can normally boot in under 45 sec. I can't figure out whats going on. I run bootvis(the xp boot speedup program from ms) and it tells me it is spending most of that 5 min in like disk initialization. I then go into disk manager, or whatever it is called now, and it says that something is wrong with one of my disks. I try a bunch of things, reformat fdisk to destroy and recreate partitions, finally I give it to my friend with a drive tester. It failed really quickly something was wrong with the drive (and i had just recieved it from WD a few months prev) oh well.

A 100GB drive? That's not stock with an 8100... is it an external or internal? Primary or secondary drive? If internal and not pre-packaged, did you install it, or Dell?

I cannot suggest any installation that includes in past or present, part of the Windows ME system. Not sure exactly how the hard drive actually fits into this, but I would suggest a fresh installation with your XP media. fyi... if it's an upgrade disc, it should prompt you to insert a copy of your 98/ME disc, insert that disc, and it will install a complete copy of XP without copying anything from ME into the mix.

I don't think a defrag will fix the problem....but good luck.

Irq conflict? Try to get into safe mode somehow and use system restore or recovery, not sure. But restore from a saved point, it should have done that automagically. If not, try and go into your device manager and check if there are any problems.....thank you for calling technical support.
