re: the tuscany


yes, i noticed after posting that, that the rates had gone up on average to 109$ a night, but it's still cheaper and larger and, well let's be honest, cleaner than the alexis is.

i'm pissed about the 21 thing, i'm only 19, but my boyfriend is 23 so i'll have him book the reservation this year.

i could do without the casino, too, i really am not interested in gambling or most of the obnoxious people it brings along.


anyway. yeah. tuscany is still a good option but yes it does appear the best western purchased it, which bites. i'mma call them up and see what i can do about a rate.

did you take a cab from tuscany to AP or walk?

i had my car.. i only stayed there the first night--we thought we'd just stay up (my boyfriend and i) but we decided we better sleep and some people we'd met from the bay caravan had told us about it, so..


anyway, we drove to the alexis beacuse the next night we had a room there..

its an ok walk though, its hot but it's not an awful walk i dont think.. its about 15 minutes of a walk or so depending how fast you go ..

either would be ok, cab would only be worthwhile with a few other people to split the fare. it's short, only reason to have a cab is the heat.

hey maybe if we want to try to get a rate negotiated for a group at the tuscany???

anyone else want to tsay there? maybe i can get that going and then rides/cab fares won't be an issue.

if i can get a group rate...

keep in mind people, stumbling distance in that heat, even at night, is about 1/5th of what you actualy think you can do.

i stayed 1 street corner down and i couldnt walk anywhere in that heat. the air COOKS your lungs from te inside out.

Fortunatley I thrive in the warm dry heat and I've done the walk to the Amerisuites before. I should be fine. I don't recomend anyone walking any further than that tho.

I'm stayed for the past few years at the Budget Suites around town. They are very nice, bit cramped, but only about $200 a WEEK!!! (yes, WEEK)

The only problems have been the distance, you either need wheels or a cab ride to/from every time. So again the cab rides eats into the room funds. It's also a pain because you have no way to stash your gear and half to shlep it all around with you all weekend.

Places I've stayed over the years:

Amerisuites: Very nice for the price, walking distance to the AP, and across the street from the Quik-E-Mart. Large rooms, desk, couch, mini kitchen, fridge. Had high-speed net access when I was there, then it was gone, but now I understand it's back again. Free breakfasts.

Caesar's Palace: Wotta dump. Small, ill-maintained rooms, grumpy staff, piss-poor hotel layout. The only two reasons I enter the place are the two sushi places (decent for Las Vegas), and Black Hat.

Flamingo: Nothing special, room-wise. Average size, clean, well-maintained, competent staff, decent prices. Sensible hotel layout. Tends to attract an older crowd. $5 will get you a meter-tall pink plastic glass full of any mixed drink you ask for. And apparently, as long as you're capable of speech, they'll keep selling 'em to you.

MGM Grand: My current favorite. Whirlpool tubs that can fit 6-8 humans comfortably. Suites with 2-3 rooms. Full kitchens. DVD players and Bose waveradios in the rooms. (the rooms I'm describing are, however, $250-400 a night). Friendly blackjack dealers. Terminus of the monorail between the MGM and what's more-or-less Caesar's Palace area, making travel to/from BlackHat simple. Friendly, attentive staff. Some of the best room-service food on the Strip. Package store in the hotel.

I just booked a room at the Howard Johnson Inn at the airport, but I haven't seen any reviews of it. Anyone had good/bad experiences with the place? It's cheap ($39 for weekdays, $59 for the weekend), and it's only 1 mile from the alexis. Any reviews?

Also, the guy at the HJ who booked my room said he had no knowledge of a free shuttle or lower rates for Defcon, or any conventions. I'll call to confirm this with a manager tomorrow, but does anyone know in the meantime?

I believed I stayed at that HW last year, I do remember it being a HW.

It was cheap, but I paid for it in the end. My room was totally trashed, ac really didn't work, and looked like it was never cleaned, and then I had to either walk to DC or take a taxi, and I really didn't want to stumble around Vegas all drunk. The 1 mile can fool you. There is NO shuttle.

They do have a casion/bar that is really lame, but there are a ton of places to eat just up the street if I remember correctly.

Do yourself a favor and try to stay somewhere near DF to really soak it up.

I stayed at the luxor last year it was pretty good and I know we got a good price but I don't remember what it was. The place was pretty good. This year we have to say at some crapy place for like $50 a night. But at least to me it is free.:D

Last year I stayed in Embassy Suites, kitty corner from Hard Rock. The map says it is .5mi I believe. It wasn't a bad walk, but I wouldn't want to stay any farther than that. It was *just* close enough to stumble to after no sleep. My friends want to stay somewhere closer this year.

I've stayed at the aladdin in the past, the rates are reasonable for being a newer hotel, the rooms are nice, and it is within stumbling distance up to a 50/50 mix of booze to blood...after that the cab fair is cheap since it is so close. oh, and did i mention that the give you a computer in every room (oops).
