The FBI used to love busting phreaks because we took meticulous and detailed notes about every system that we explored and encountered. Cards, codes, numbers, systems, people, the list goes on and on. However, having notes was necessary because phreaking was hard work. Systems were complex. It was impossible to rely on memory alone. Some phreaks developed their own shorthand to make their notes hard to read. Whether or not they did, they always had notes. They could always refer back to what they'd encountered before in order to pick up on where they left off.
