How bout we let sleeping dogs lay? I know it's pain for a few people on this forum, so lets not dredge up a sore topic.

Sorry, didn't notice this thread was long dead. I'd looked for advice on breaking-in Doc Martens as I'd bought my first pair, then posted a reply. Should've checked dates I guess.

Originally posted by Corben DallasI've lived in England, home of DMs, for 48 years. I bought my first pair upon taking up a job which requires walking up to 15 miles a day. (I've walked further, but not each and every day of the week like now!)
I went for the traditional 8 eyelet black DMs, the ones most go for. Big mistake. They hurt like hell above the ankles, and after a couple of days I worked out why. The top two eyelets tighten above your ankle, and so stop your ankle from bending! Or rather, your ankle bends, but the top of the boot doesn't. Ouch.
You can try loosening the laces, or only lacing up the first 6 eyelets as I did, but tough - you're going to be in pain.
The solution? Simple. Get 6 eyelet boots, which end around your ankles, so your feet can bend as they're meant to do. 8 eyelet boots are bloody stupid.
I returned the 8 eyelets and complained that they crippled me, then bought the Classic 939z Black Greasy. These are basically 6 eyelet boots with a non-shiny finish (good if you want to waterproof them as I did) and a padded ankle collar for extra comfort.
The only breaking-in of these is waiting for the soles to go all spongey, which takes a week or two I'm told. Everything else is hunky dory.

Nice Doc's mate
Well mate I've been wearing Doc's of all models for years even when they were not so fashionable (over here anyway) they are a bitch to breakin I used to get blisters and all even resorted to bashing the back heel with a hammer to soften the leather it helped some if your curious but the best thing to do is put a sock in olive oil or something like that put adry sock over that then wear around the house till broke in then my friend you got yourself without doubt the most comfortable boot on the planet.;)
