Big time noob and def con virgin. Point me in the right direction?

Hi as the title says…Anyway, I’m working full time and also a student full time. I’m trying to negotiate my way to this conference to get my learning on as my intentions are directed upon the noble path of being at least a mildly decent nerd. I was hoping any of you good folks would know where I may find any of the community that may let me sleep on their hotel floor for a cheap contribution or the likes.

What I do know is that there is a lot of camaraderie in this community and I’d really love to be a part of it. I am a very transparent person where it’s suitable so please if you have any questions of who this stranger is or would be able to point me in the right direction, I would very much appreciate your response.

At one time, we had a forum for "Ride and Room Sharing" so people could try to connect with each other to make arrangements. It has fallen out of favor, as the conference grew, because with a larger group of attendees, chances became much better that someone near a person looking to engage in ride/room sharing could find someone that was:
1) Nearby
2) known in some capacity (professional, mailing list, social network, etc.)

Few people are happy to invite a total stranger into their room to sleep. Arranging a ride sharing is more common with strangers.
Best suggestion? Join local user-groups, or mailing lists or social network groups with people near you, to see if you can find someone you know, who is going to DEF CON, and would be interested in sharing room space, or ride space.

A Pandemic adds additional complications to prospects of sharing a room with a stranger.

I do not know if "Rides and Room Sharing" will be brought forward before DEF CON 30 or not. If it does, it will probably happen 1-2 months before DEF CON and appear in the DEF CON 30 planning forum.

If you're looking for cheaper accommodations (and I admit the major LV Strip hotels can be spendy lately), there are a few lower-priced alternatives within an easy walk of the Con.

Ellis Island and Tuscany are much cheaper than Flamingo/Harrahs/etc and are an easy walk to the new Caesars Conference Center. Casino Royale is next door to Harrah's and is cheaper, but usually not as cheap as Ellis/Tuscany. Silver Seven is walkable to the Con, but assuming that you really like to walk! :)

There are also tons of off-Strip hotels and motels that are cheaper, but then transportation negates much of the savings.

There's also the hostels. (Feelin' lucky? Are ya? Huh?) :)

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely get the apprehension to bunk down with a new person. However, I am certainly an adventurer so I’m not opposed to something less costly or with a walk. I like the idea of trying to recruit local people to become as excited about this as I am. I’m certain such people exist, I just need to find them.

I'm a newbie to defcon as well so I'm going to follow this post to see if any good tidbits show up. I used to attend COMDEX back in the day, (the day being back when this commercial was a hit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk7yqlTMvp8) so yeah, I'm that old.
