The Glider is one of the quintessential symbols of the hacker culture, as it represents the search beyond the boundaries of the group, a quest to found new knowledge and unchartered territories and frontiers.
The Glider, most of the time travels alone.
It is in our hacker nature to question and challenge the assumptions of every system, technological or human. That is not intrinsecally good or bad, it just is our nature, like the glider in "Game of Life" we abandon our household environment and we travel trough tought and ideollogy to find and challenge new ideas. I can not avoid it, my head just figures out new "improvements" for processes... and people.
That way of thinking has allowed me to travel the world and meet new people, places and ideas. But has disconected me almost completely from my relatives.
It is what it is.
This year has surely been a ride, from Japan to DEFCON
, a LOT of personal projects in between... and one of the worst depressions of my life.It has been dificult to aknowledge that despite the best efforts to make a shift in my immediate personal/social environment, those efforts have been in vain, wasted by their receivers, flushed in the toilet... like 💩.
A wise warrior said some years ago that when you start to have success in a military or social movement the most dangerous temptation is to try to fix every problem that comes into your way like a "knight in shiny armor and white horse" , and that is the easiest way to your downfall. First you have to build your ideology and legitimate yourself to your own. I know, it sounds like a trap but sadly it is true , the only horse that you can get to the water and make it drink... its yourself, and sometimes not even that.
Thus I'm writing my two cents of humility.
It is my duty as Hacker to live like a Glider, to test those assumptions of adventure and discovery in my own life and with that testing acquire my own legitimacy, there is no need to convince others, I only can show new ideas to those who are open and willing to listen to them. The Glider sometimes dissapears when wastes its energy in non-receptive clusters in the "Game of Life".
Morpheus said to Neo in the Matrix:
“I can only show you the door,
You’re the one who has to walk through it”
Many times people in our near circles, families , friends, are not ready to walk through the door... And that is ok, maybe it is not in this lifetime for them.
Our duty is to ourselves first, and then to those who are willing to listen.
Thank you for reading, fellow Glider.
