Registration Question

My 6 year old son has been bugging me for 4 years to be allowed to go to Defcon. I thought about bringing him this year. Am I going to need to pay to get him in? I don't think I can afford it... and I couldn't find anything on the site about it.

Heh. He was almost 3. And he had his own computer, and all he really knew was it was about computers, and that I was going, and he had to stay behind.
Ah well. He'll have to miss this year. He can stay with my mom, she'll love it.

Good reasons to bring children to con:

1. Teach him how to exploit *nix, windows, etc... no one expects a 6yr old to hax0r:D
3. Use him to attract chicks...Chick says:"Awww look at the little hax0r" and bam you're in
4. Excellent spokesperson for script kiddies
5. They can crawl into small spaces: air ducts to locked server rooms, throught the ceiling, etc...
6. Use them as a diversion tactic. ex. Hostess has a conversation with lost boy(a.k.a your son) while you retrieve password from bottom of KB

Reasons to leave children home:

Well, now that he can read, he knows how to use a tomsrtbt or a gentoo livecd to get into a file system he doesn't have root on, and he knows where his kernel is and what it's for, more or less. I'm working on teaching him to compile one.
He runs his own debian box. It's my old duron 800. So yeah, he prolly does know more than most of the script kiddies out there. heh.
BUT, he doesn't get to go this year. I already have friends scraping up gas money to get me there, and a place for me to stay.
And.. using him to get chicks doesn't appeal to me. I'm female myself, and straight. =) .. However, guys have considered babysitting him for just that reason.
I sitll think it's kinda lame that it's $75 for a little kid. =(

There have been a number of children over the last few years. While I'm sure our 7 year old is at a point where she would learn quite a bit, there is NO WAY IN HELL we would bring her. I think it's irresponsible to expose a child to that environment. Perhaps if I had a family member coming along that could take her FAR, FAAARRRRR away from the hotel at night, I **MIGHT** consider it, but even then, it would be a stretch. Defcon is more than the talks, and we all know that. It is NOT a family-friendly event.

There are plenty of local events where my daughter can learn from and socialise with local geeks without completely sacrificing her innocence. Granted, we have looser rules on language and behaviour than many parents, but I still don't think my daughter needs to be somewhere that it's possible to run into a couple copulating in the bushes, have a talk interrupted by a streaker, or have the majority of females prancing around half dressed (yeah, great role models there!).
