  • Guide to the end, or when to leave...

I've seen a lot of questions about when to leave, the end of the con, etc. My first few cons I flew out on Sunday, no idea how much I missed.

Last year I was driving through, no schedule, moving cross country. Sunday evening is spectacular. Very mellow party, you actually get to talk to a lot of really good people, including the goons who finally get to stretch out and relax. Alcohol is essentially free as a massive pile starts collecting at the gazeebo as people clean out their rooms.

Monday afternoon is once again a nice relaxing stretch. 95% of the people left clear out, and again build a dangerous collection of alcohol in the Gazeebo. This is also the beginning of panic as people who missed rides/connections figure out how to get home. Lots of good conversation throughout the day and evening. Some people last year caught the red-eye heading east that night - perfect timing.

Tuesday early afternoon I realized that if I didn't check out and leave town I would stay far longer than intended. Showered, sobered, drove east (well south and west first).

Somewhere in there I even found a new nick (cbyter) since I cycle through them every 4-5 years.

That's my wrap up of the wrap up of the con.
If you can remember DefCon, you weren't really there...

i am generally there some time before the con, except last year when I did the death race, but I hate vegas so I have headed home after closing ceremonies... if you haven't guessed defcon is the only time I intentionally go to vegas.

      Blackwave, you're missing out.

I always stay until about noon on Monday. It is nice for all the reasons chrisp mentioned, and as a goon I can say that the relaxation is nice, it gives me a chance to actually sit down. Last year I was on my feet so much that my heels started bleeding. This year I'm buying new shoes before Blackhat. :)

The Sunday night festivities are great, which is another reason I get depressed seeing people start leaving right after the closing ceremonies, they miss so much. Defcon comes once a year for three days. Get there Thursday and leave Monday and stretch it to five. After all, since defcon is over one day later for those of us that stay, we have one less day to wait till next year.

I currently have six days marked on my calendar for DEFCON this year... though convincing people that work the next day to stay longer is quite the task. :( no idea why they wouldn't take more days off. :/ ... alas.

I made the mistake of leaving on Sunday... ONCE. It's definitely worth staying through 'til Monday. Any later, though, and you start to feel like you're standing on the empty lot after the circus has left town.

I felt that way at ApacheCon. Since it is of course, at the Alexis Park in November.

I found myself by Pool 1 looking around and wondering where all the people in black were, and I was sad. Then I went to Shatters room and chilled with him and Seric and I felt all better.

Actually, if you hadn't called, I probably wouldn't have left at all on Monday!! WHOOPS! Yeah... umm... early morning flights on Monday aren't a really great idea, and early morning is earlier than you'd expect when you have to drop off a car and get through the anal probing at the airport.

Last year, Sunday night turned out to be the most fun in ages. I left Monday early, I must have been in the checkout line for an hour at least. The plane ride sucked rocks because of the heat.

Leaving monday is the way to go..As a goon, Sunday night is the only night I get to relax..(I feel like a teamster when the hotel calls me Sunday night with a problem and I get to say 'aint my job')..I prefer to leave before it gets too late on Monday tho..usualy because I gotta get back to my regular life, but the hotel gets a weird empty feel to it after about 2pm on Monday. I also hate vegas, so as soon as I am no longer needed, I'm gone.
If you get to stay Sunday night, I highly recommend it.

I return whatever i wish . Its called FREEDOWM OF RANDOMNESS IN A HECK . CLUSTERED DEFEATED CORn FORUM . Welcome to me

I don't know i think that could be actually boring...
Buut, i never intended Defcon before, so it could be nice (besides..i love Vegas..i spent a lot of money on those slot machines--i think the casinos are cheating :D )

I'd recommend leaving late Monday. I haven't quite figured out how I'm getting to and fro defcon this year, but I'd prefer a red-eye Monday night, getting home Tuesday morning.

                            Monday. Yar. Monday.

Its definitely the good recover from hangover day and remember that you came to DC to ummmmm learn something er um yeah..... or get laid, get drunk, and get a ride to the hospital....or something! (all the above)

And talk to everyone you were TRYING To talk to the whole weekend but were too blissfully trashed to get a word or two out.

If you leave Monday, leave late... worrying about getting on an early plane out takes a good chunk of fun and time away from Sunday night
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.
