Anyone get any good pics? Just writing an essay about it and I'd like to link to some pics.

Yes you can find lock picks online for cheaper than they were sold at the convention. There are a few reasons they were sold at higher prices then you can buy online. First, online you find anything cheaper, if you wanted to wait you could have, but it was the fact you could get them at the con without the hassle and work on the lock board right there. Wouldnt be as fun if i said you could buy them from a site online and wait to get them.

The second reason for getting them at higher price was already stated. And even though they were a little higher priced, figure shipping into it and you dont save that much nor do you have instant gratification of your purchase ;)

I hope everyone is getting good practice and will be ready to enter the contest for next year :D

Another thing is customer service. At Defcon you can try out the picks right there on the locks, ask questions as long as you like, and probably get a little assistance and some tips.

The #1 reason to pay the extra money to buy picks at defcon is that you can remain anonymous. If you order them off the net then you pay by credit card, you get into their database, and you can be tracked. Buy at defcon and you pay with anonymous cash, you never give your personal info, and you're in and out in just a few minutes.

Now think about it, do you really want to be in an FBI database of "People who have bought lock pics"?

at least with the pics you get at con, you know that no one is recording your name/phone/SS number and putting you on any gov. lists of "potential" felons. the Con market is totaly annonomous. that makes it worth it to me.

Yeah, that was me. I must admit a huge amout of luck. Just for reference, I used only my hand made picks, not the ones I bought from Irvine Underground because I was more used to the feel of my original ones (Props to Blackwave for helping me get them down there!)

As for the Irvine picks being a ripoff - Dude, I can't get any of this stuff in Canada, let alone anonymously. I was quite thankful to be able to get the stuff and not worry about curious postal inspectors or customs agents.

I'd start by reading the MIT lockpick guide (oldy but a goody) and making your own set first.

i am interested in getting into lockpicking. Where is a good place online to get a set of well made and good priced lock picks, i just need a small set. I almost bought that keychain set at The one booth that was selling them for $40, but someone told me it was a ripoff, i didn't know if it was or not, as i had never really priced lockpicks. Thanks

The contest went very well. Just a few critiques:

1. test your electronic scoring for heat issues next year

2. scheduling was wierd, no one seemed to know when things were going on. It was also very closely scheduled to the wardriving contest. Driving around for 3 hours on rough roads does wierd things to your hands.

3. crowd control. I did'nt mind the crowd, it's just that around that table not everyone could see very well.

Suggestions:

1. see if it's possible to get one of the speaking rooms next year in the evening. putting video of the contestants working on locks would help the crowd.

2. more 1 on 1 competition. I found it really fun to go head to head with 1 other person in the 3rd round.

Can't wait till the stats are posted (I'm just vain that way)
