The meeting may be mostly outside..... A more commercial vibe is available indoors, probably downtown, but refreshments are definitely limited there. I wasn't sure how the members would prefer to approach meetings <casual/serious>, we may find that different meetings have different requirements. While there is a lot of 'business' to deal with, I expected the initial meeting to be casual so we could get acquainted. I can consider the meeting tone to be the first vote via email.... < casual (UNLV) / serious (downtown) >.

I'm just curious as to how someone being a part of another group makes them a 'spy'.

I can appreciate being anon but unless you inviable whats the point, our face recognition software will match you anyways... (kidding).

I must have been mistaken as to the point of DC-Groups. You are sitting here talking abou "spies". So I am wondering what the point in Dc-groups is? I mean, I thought information was to flow freely and even post the talks online for everyone. And since when did Law Enforcement become spies? If you're not doing anything illegal then they won't give you a hard time. But Honestly, I would like to know the point of DcGroups now, since we are discussing "Spies".

You are correct HighWizard...from the DCG announcement:

“What does it mean to have a DC Group in my city?” The DC Group function is a cooperative environment where each member contributes somehow. They get together once a month and mull over a particular technical topic (no politics or ‘save the planet’ crap here). Hanging out to meet fellow hackers is recommended, but not required (some of you won’t even get along with your own mom). Presentations given at the meetings should be put on the website for other groups to use as inspiration for their own groups. Each DC Group has an alias in the defcon.org DNS server that points to their own group website. The DC Group page, complete with guidelines, etc will be available on defcon.org shortly
          ...

"What’s required?” A place to meet - park, library, mall food court, etc. A point of contact (POC) for the group - someone who doesn’t mind keeping things focused. A website - not required, but it helps to give your group visibility and allows other groups to look at the talks your groups has had. Technical talks - let’s face it, every hacker wants to be more technical. Members - that’s mostly up to you. We’ll list you on the site, but only you have direct access to the tech heads in your area.
          perl -e 'print pack(c5, (41*2), sqrt(7056), (unpack(c,H)-2), oct(115), 10)'

This is what I thought it was all about. I have specialty in some area's of tech, and wish to disiminate this knowledge to others. Further, when I moved to 702, my shirt "Stop laughing, computers are cool now" did not apply. It would be nice to know that there is a hacker pulse alive in vegas, and I can be apart of that, further, just to meet other people like me. Right?

              Wow,
Its amazing how literally some people take each word thats written.
How about this. Try making some creative suggestions.
So far I haven't recieved a single one, no topics, no locations, nothing.
How exactly would I limit the "Free flow of infrmation anyway?"
And where did I mention doing any thing illegal? What ever.
Did you stop reading just before "......, or aren't welcome,"
I didnt get a pissed off call from Freaky, apparently he understood JK meant JUST KIDDING.

Any way I hope this tone isnt what the 702 group turns out to be like, which would make it feel like some of the other LV groups have to me. (Assuming Im intitled to an opinion)

This is an oppourtunity to start a great group.
The group and what it becomes will be the direct result of ALL of the combined input, creativity and efforts of those involved.
              No matter the profession.

Say what you mean, and mean what you say.

If you read the happen to read the DC-Groups Mailing List or the forums, if you happen to check some of the other groups web pages, you may have a number of creative idea's. Moreover, it look quite a lot like you were only referencing "freaky' with that "JK".

If you want it to work you need to find out who your locals are and get in touch with them. If I was in Las Vegas I would have already gotten in touch with Hackajar, Siviak, L0NDO and some other people on the forums who live in the 702 area. I would have advertised in the area, pounded the pavement, and gotten the message out. I hope you already did these things, and don't expect the members to just come to you. You might even like to invite the local Infragard people: http://www.infragard.net/lasvegas.htm

No one ever said being a PoC was an easy thing. If it was, then everyone would be a PoC. But Being a PoC actually takes work and committment.

How bout we just have a meeting and see what everyone wants to do, first meeting should not be so set in stone with activities, ya?

                  Then just go from there

This all was just disscussed on the mailing list, suscribe and enjoy......I in fact remember answering this question.

Honestly I don't even think this should be an issue.
Were not deny anyone access to meetings, so saying you should go to X meeting not Y meeting doesn't make sense. People should just go where they are most comfortable.
That was what Highwizard said, and that is how I also feel on the issue.

another active group in LV is the HSK-Hack-Sec-Kahn

hey, I'm kind of interested in joining you guys, just a few quick questions.. What's the average age of you guys? I'm only 16 and don't want to seem out of place, especially if you guys are all over 21 :/. DC 11 was my first and I had a pretty good time and I'd like to keep going for the next few years but not by myself this time, heh.

some are under or at 18. Some, like Crupt, are over the hill :P. Some are just around the party age (21 - ?). Makes no difference though, as long as you act older then 16 in public, you should be fine

                            Estimated Attendance

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a idea what the attendance for a dc702 would be? Just trying to come up with some potential meeting location reccommendations... however it would obviously be dependant on how many people were there.

Also... I think it would be nice to have a forum area on dc702 if possible...

Lastly, I know a lot of Vegans who go to Defcon, but not as many that every check this web site, or more specifically check the website after Defcon until the next one comes around. Might be nice to see if we can get the user groups to post at least an announcement to the meeting, also maybe check into local (http://slashdot.meetup.com/245) slashdot meetup and see if there is any attendance there</a>... the Vegas computer culture seems quite spread, and you may want to look into "marketing" a tad just as a means to let people know dc702 now exists.

the website now states that it will be at PC Intercrew, across from UNLV.
