Ok. I've been wondering around the web looking for bits and bobs about how to hack. And I heard Linux was the best Operating System to use. Now, I can't just go change my windows machine to linux. Wouldn't know what I'm doing.
So I gave up... Didn't know what I could do so I stopped. But then I was told the other day that there is a 700mb program you can download, copy it to a CD and run it as a bootdisk thing when Windows is loading up and KAZAAM!!! It runs Linux of the CD instead.
Do any of you know if this is true? :s

Well, theres a couple of things you can try

1. Running a liveCD Linux like slackware live or Knoppix

2. Getting your hands on a copy of Partition Magic (or something like it) and resizing your windows partition so you can have some free space for linux. Install linux on the newly freed space then use a boot manager to boot between OS' (Linux comes with a couple, GRUB and LILO are both popular)

3. Not sure if you want to make the switch? Try CygWin out. Its sort of a Linux emulator for Windows. At the very least, it would give you something to futz around with to see if you can get the hang of it.

This is a valid question, and certainly not one that would get you added to the moron club. That said, the responses you have recieved so far are valid, but I will disagree with your initial premise. There is no such thing as the best OS to use for hacking. If you are familiar with Windows and understand Windows functionality, you can do most, if not all, things in a Windows environment that you can do in a Linux environment.

Don't get me wrong, I depsise Windows and rarely use it for any personal computing. I would also certainly suggest dual booting your machine and installing a Linux distribution. Then you can begin hacking linux. If that doesn't make sense then you should find out what "hacking" really is.

So it would look something like this

NTFS(or fat32)::: /boot ::: /ext3 ::: /swap

If you are willing to go through all this then you would need to tell us or whoever you are asking personally what is the size of your Hard drive and how much space you would like to allocate to Linux....and also just as important how much memory do you have.

All this could easily be done with Partition Magic or anything else similiar...... I did find an open source project that does exactly what Pmagic does, Ill try to find it.

Ok, I can tell you now that I'm using a poor Windows 98. -_- It's only a pentium 200 and I don't want to ruin my poor computer. I have two physical hard drives already, C:\ & D:\
The D:\ I would be willing to use as a linux thingy-majig. It only has a nintendo emulator, a hidden recycle bin, command.exe, a hidden file called lol.sys, and a hidden file called msdos.sys.
It is actually the smaller drive and only has a mere 1.94GB of space (bare in mind- pentium 200mhz).
I am willing to use that if I need to. Looking at the Linux disk site thingy makes me want to download it now apart from I want to sleep.

Ok I think I get that.... So your suggesting make two partitions and make it so that it comes up saying "What do you want to run? Windows or Linux?" Yeah? Goody gum gums...

So... To wrap it up in a nutshell, do I need any space for the Linux CD/slackware thing. Whatever you call it. And whats slackware? I've heard of abandonware/shareware (good old computer games ^_^ ) etc. Also, will it run on my pentium 200mhz? It sure looks nifty... And will it run on a 1.94GB partition?

as for the question, the linux bootable cd runs only in ram, thus takes no space up on your physical drive. If you want to run a disto of linux they can be very small in size, 1.94 is good enough, get slackware, and only run fluxbox to limit the size of the distro itself. If you are familar, linux installs a bootloader called either lilo or grub, and i am sure there is another i am missing, but they allow you to select which operating systems are avalible on boot. I decided to go nuts and try out a bunch of these cd bootable things, the only problem with the slackware one, it is somewhat stripped down, not to much useful applications, but still very nice. I also took a look at straight up knoppix, very nice, but based on debian, so I am not as familar with it. Lastly I checked out and have used alot before, knoppix std, great little distro, plenty of security tools/fun to be had on a computer never ment to run such things.
