I think the fact that the people of California (of which thanfully I am not one) would elect Arnold as governor explains more about why their state is so fucked up than anything Gray Davis could ever have done.

I really am sick of people (not you specifically, Chris, just in general) outside of this state saying how much it must suck to be here. At least you don't have to live 24/7 with the legacy of Davis' litany of fuck-ups:
- Overpriced electricity
- Overpriced gasoline
- Crumbling roads
- Shitty schools
- Illegal aliens getting drivers' licenses (no vote on that one)
- Tripling of the car tax to fix his mistakes (again, no vote)
- Banning of even more firearms
- Lowered the state's financial ratings to junk bond status despite being the 5th-largest economy in the world
- Ran us right into a local recession we get to enjoy in addition to the one affecting the rest of the country
- Damn near bankrupted the state
Not bad for less than 5 years in office.
Basically, Davis ran this state like a king - but most monarchs at least understand the concept of angry mobs with pitchforks and torches as a deterrent to pulling the shit that he did. His will probably go down as the single most incompetent governorship in the state's history.
Then again, most people here are too stupid and/or apathetic to care. As long as they can sit on their burgeoning asses and watch teevee all day long, who gives a fuck about what's going on around them?
Oh, and to answer the question posed as the topic of the thread: not as happy as if McClintock had got in, but extremely relieved it's not Bustamante.

I'd have to go along with skroo on this. I think the only difference of opinion we might have is on illegal aliens getting drivers license. Actually I'm more concerned about them having insurance whether they have a license or not. I also voted for McClintock.
Davis wasn't even bright enough to save his political career which is probably over, well barring the incredibly appathetic and sheepish voters.

Dude..I totally understand, and I don't know California politics (I lived there in the late 80's/early 90's and got out as quick as I could). I certainly wasn't defending Gray Davis, so I hope I didn't come off that way.
You made my point though...I think that people in CA voted for a name they had heard on TV rather than the qualified candidate (and I agree that was McClintock from what I saw on MY teevee ;) )

Oh, no, it's cool, and I was sort of on the defensive about it. It's more just that I am tired of hearing over and over and over how much it must suck to have {insert popular cause o' the week} in California from people who don't live here. It'd be like me calling Bill Owens (R - Colorado) incompetent and useless - I live a third of a continent away, and consequently have no business passing comment on an administration I have no dealings with whatsoever.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with you on the first part of that. I don't necessarily think Schwarzenegger is unqualified, but rather unproven - after all, anyone is technically meant to be able to run (and we had 135 contenders proving that), and there is precedent for a Governor of California being an actor (Ronald Reagan). Granted, electing him is a big gamble to be taking, and I hope it's the right one.
I also hope that this doesn't set the precedent here that people vote for a particular candidate with the expectation in mind that they can just recall them and get someone better later on. That is exactly the sort of idiot mentality I can see developing here.

All good...and hey, if you feel like it you are more than welcome to badmouth ALL of the elected officials in Maryland. Living here and talking shit about other states is kind of like pointing out the splinter in your neighbor's eye while you have a plank in your own (obligatory Biblical reference while discussing politics). Maryland is as fucked up a state as you will ever visit (assuming you drive around Jersey of course).
Davis ran the state into the ground....that is very true
Arnold was elected by the people who have seen his action movies. I personally believe that he is just a talking head with his advisors running the show. I mean look at the only debate that was had in the election, it was skripted, even tho it didnt appear that way.
Once I am done with my undergrad work here, I am out.....

Arnold wants to tax the Indian Reservations? WTF......thats retarded. They have been raped of their lands, I dont think the US gov can ever heal that wound so let them have their casinos its not a fuckin mafia for god's sake...
I work with these so called "indian reservation casino's" do you know who runs them? Companies from my state (navada), and property management groups. I don't think I have ever talked to an "Indian", better "Native American/Inditus Person". The people who are really making money (not that the tribe isn't getting some cash) are the Big Corporation around the Country. Further, it's taking away from my states budget (gambling tax). I say tax them, they are not benifiting greatly anyways (with outside interests).

The guy is 61 and have been involved with the state govenment since the regan days.
His govenorship was just the final bit of padding for his early retirement.
buh-bye.

the state leglislature already told arnold to not even try to attack the triple car-tax so its not going to happen.
Bustamante promised to abuse and haul the Power companies into court and even attack Gray Davis while he was in office about being tremendously partial to them. Arnold wants to tax the Indian Reservations? WTF......thats retarded. They have been raped of their lands, I dont think the US gov can ever heal that wound so let them have their casinos its not a fuckin mafia for god's sake...
The car tax is something from the Wilson days. It was flagged to go back to full price (Wilson cut car registration by 1/3) if the economy coudln't support it. Well, it can't because of Davis mis management. WhatArnie woudl need to do, is re-sign the previous cut that wilson put into effect, in order to make it go away.
It's not that we're paying triple, it's that we're back to paying full price.
Second, I fully support the Gaming taxes. This is saying a lot since I'm highly vocal about tribal rights (being NA myself). However, they have a responcibility to give back to whereever they set up a casino at. I think how they give back shoudl be up to them (land restoration, schools, roads, infrastructure, whatever, as long as it benefits the greater good of the community they are located at).
The Csio going in Rohnert Park is already giving $100,000,000 ove rthe next 20 years to local schools to improve their quality. That's not even considered tax. That's what they're giving. If they're taxed, yo may see less of this, but still, I don't care.
Hell, if the state could be support on tribal gaming alone, making EVERYONE pay less tax, more power to them. The result is bringing out of state money into teh state, for state use. It's what the other 49 do. California is the only state that pretty much sends all it's money out of state (like Davis buying out of state power then selling it back at 1/5 what was paid).
Tribal gaming is a business. Plain and simple. Tax it like all other California businesses.

Amen to that.
Oversight: Stations Casino's, a major "local's" casino group here in town (vegas) just opened a very large NA res casino near Sac town. They paid for everything to put up the Casino, and paid to transfer a group of exc's out to Cali to run the thing. Sick and said, when my state says "NA casino's are stealing our business" but our companies will be happy to open up shop their.
Gambling, no "pesent" benifets
(oddly I'm not against gambling, maybe I should start going to groups?)
