CD-ROM driver problems

I recently went to rip one of my new cds, when I noticed that it wasn't reading it.

I am running XP Pro, so I went to the device manager to find that both my Sony CD-RW and Samsung DVD-ROM drives both had the warning exclamation point. I clicked the properties and recieved this message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

So, I have tried looking on both the samsung and sony websites, and googled for a while and have not found anything that would work to fix this.

Anyone have any suggestions/ideas?

The Samsung is an SD-612 and the Sony is a CRX140E

Any help is appreciated, and hopefully this question was posed well enough to avoid being flamed.

I did a google search, and I found some usful links, as well as some driver updates, what I would look at is...what did you install recently that might cause those errors, if not, go to the drives and try to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall them when windows reconizes them.

I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling both drives with the same errors.

I recently upgraded from ME to XP, when I did, the version of Adaptec creator wasn't supported, and the drivers for that, weren't loading anymore because it would cause windows to become unstable. So I removed those, and now this problem comes up, but I don't think that it was deleting these drivers that caused the problem because windows wasn't loading them to begin with. This is the only thing that I can think of that I may have done.

I went to cdrom-drivers.com and looked for the drivers there, but the ones that came up either weren't for XP, or had really shitty feedback.

Did you upgrade to XP or do a clean install of XP? I have heard of nothing but problems from people that upgraded instead of doing a fresh install.

Word, upgrades from what I have seen all have sucked the big one. I would suggest a clean install, you can do this with the upgrade by presenting it with a valid disk on install.

Yeah, I upgraded so all my files and programs would carry over to XP.

So I am kinda stuck for ideas here, I tried replacing the old drivers with some I downloaded, but still no CD-ROM drives.

I am pretty unfamiliar with installs, so what exactly is a fresh install? The first thing that came to my head was formatting the HD and installing it from scratch, but again, I know next to nothing about installs.

Back up the files you want to keep. Format the Drive and do a fresh install. And I hope you learned your lesson - Don't upgrade Operating systems. Back up and then do Fresh Install.
