    I usually install windows first, and then overlay with linux, and use lilo/grub to overwrite the MBR to dual boot the system. Eeek, you killed it, now, just get lilo up and running, a simple google, or look in linuxquestions.org will show you how to do it either way, I personally have never used grub, but my suggestion is lilo. So if you can boot into linux, set it all up thru there...the lilo can be found in /etc/lilo.conf and the info you will need to set it up is in your /boot directory, these values may be differant on differant distros...

    mine looks like this

    GNU nano 1.2.2 File: lilo.conf

    boot = /dev/hda
    lba32
    prompt
    timeout = 150
    # Normal VGA console
    vga = normal
    message=/usr/share/lilo-bootscreens/xray-blue.boot
    # End LILO global section
    # Linux bootable partition config begins
    image = /boot/vmlinuz
    root = /dev/hda7
    label = Linux
    read-only
    #
    image = /boot/vmlinuz-orig
    root = /dev/hda7
    label = Linux-orig
    read-only
    # Linux bootable partition config ends
    # DOS bootable partition config begins
    other = /dev/hda1
    label = Windows
    table = /dev/hda
    # DOS bootable partition config ends

    Minus my nifty graphical lilo thing, you should see how it is setup, you just have to figure out your partitions, and in the linux boot up you have to have it point to the right files to load on boot, these are found in your /boot directory.

    EDIT : this is all done on my Slackware 9.1 boxen

    Well heres an update. I found an XP disc and loaded it up and went to fix the mbr as I was told. I went and did this and when I rebooted it got the message "error loading operating system." So I'am playing around with the repair tool and searching google for stuff. But if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

    Blah blah blah...my distro has more wang than your distro, blah blah blah, package manager blah blah blah.

    READ THIS BEFORE POSTING HERE--------v

    If anyone posts a "my distro is better than your distro" bullshit post on this thread again while it is open...I am gonna ban em.

    There is no such thing as a best distro. There is no such thing as a secure OS. Work/use what you feel comfortable with. If you have a reason for liking a specific OS then use it. Jesus....do you really think it matters to anyone else what you use?

    Note: this is not in regards to any of the previous posts in this thread...this is an attempt to head ignorant Distro cock size comparisons off at the pass.

    apt-get trembles before the mighty EMERGE!!!!!

    but, the gentoo install is a tad more tricky....do what your heart tells you...listen to that little voice inside telling you what distro thy shall choose.

    If you have dialup, I would be willing to compress the images I have for 9.1 into managable size files; just PM me. Slack's cool, but I reccomend Debian. I just can't get over apt-get, and have not fooled around with slapt-get yet. I could even mail some cds to you, for about $3.00 via paypal to cover costs.

    reset MBR to windows linking "fdisk /mbr"

    also, if you are putting slackware on it, why not just boot to the slack disk and install? Then you can load lilo from there, and have your XP and Linux dual boot?
