I was curious here if anyone has modded a xbox before?, cause I was gonna get it together as a sorta of dc707 project.

I am probley gonna run a xodus mod chip on a version 1.1 or 1.0 xbox, but it is hard to find older xboxes unelss i buy used, which I am not to thrilled about doing.

There's little reason to purchase a modchip for an XBox anymore. If you purchase a used XBox you can get in through the buffer overflow in the savegame parser of MechAssault, provided you can create a cable to transfer the savegame onto your XBox somehow. Then you simply replace a font file with one which exploits the font handling code of the Dashboard, and use that to start a launcher application like Evolution X. You will probably also want to flash the BIOS shadow to allow unsigned XBEs to be run using something like Phoenix.

(ed: I should note that the MechAssault savegame exploit will work on any version of XBox, but newer ones have supposedly corrected the input validation errors in the Dashboard font handling code. Theoretically you should still be able to install an older version of the Dashboard and continue to use the font handling exploit, but I haven't seen anyone yet claim success with such an approach)

Xboxen with Xbox live 2.0 also won't like the software hack either.

I am trying to get my hands on an older xbox, but most stores only carry the newest 1.4 xboxes, I am unsure if I can downgrade it.

Talk to telco. For DC503 we are going to be doing TiVo and Console system mods in the future. He might have some info.

yeah, I was gonna do the xbox part of console modding.. and chip is still the way to go imo. Consider matrix though.. unless you really want to do soldering as part of the thing. I am actually interested in playing with distcc on a farm. Eeek is correct though, it will likely be part of a future dc503 topic

I have a chip here, Gid is nice enough to have sold his xbox and not the chip ;) So, I now have to find a 1.0 1.1 box, then it is all set, I think funcoland sells them used for about 150 but that is a little high, I might try to accuire one for maybe 120 or so.

hell.. I almost thought retail stores were getting pretty close to $150 on them... ebay. It may take some hunting, but you can probably get them now for 100 or less

Why would you install a modchip, which costs money and is prone to physical failure, versus using the software hack which costs no money and is not prone to physical failure? The only remotely valid reason is that you're a tard who gets his kicks on XBox Live...

                      xbox live detects modchips too.

The software hack is the only way to go, I use it uh... to uh... run legitimate open source operating systems such as linux... yeah *COUGH*

Some mod chips, such as the X2 Pro, have a switch that lets you disable the chip when you want to use XBox Live. Of course, this only begs the question, "Why would you want to use XBox Live?"

If you are still looking for an older version than 1.4, Id look at pawn shops, flea markets or in the used systems at places like gamestop and EB. Other than that, sometimes you can find someone selling them on www.dslreports.com and ofcourse there is always EBAY. usually those end up being newer versions though.

                          Good Luck!

I was lucky enough to buy a modded v1.1 from a friend with a matrix chip, and i've had an interesting time finding my way around the system, upgrading EvoX, various versions of XBMP/XBMC and difficulties updating the matrix bios when it was still in the box.

With a 120GB drive, it's got a ton of room for...backups of games i have...movies, music and whatever else you want to have on it.

the latest chips work on the new xboxes ,do they not?
I saw one that was solderless .
