stupid question, but does the account you are using have admin rights to that machine? that would be the obvious issue. Also try checking the files permissions both from within xp and using attrib from the command line, see if theres something set thats preventing you from doing it..

1st check what Noid said... If you have the Perms. then it's WINXP.

Even with Full admin rights/Logged in as Admin, XP will not allow
you to delete files that were recently opened/moved/copied Etc.

I have tried to find the cause of it, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the Files system caching the files.

This "Feature" has piss'ed me off so much that I refuse to use XP.
All of my machines are on either Win2K or Debian...

      Good Luck

When I have to order media, I usualy use www.cheapbytes.com or www.linuxcentral.net for my roms. They're cheap enough that even with shipping to the UK, they still wont cost you a fortune.

or you could find a local linux users group and get burned cds from them, they'll be glad to do it.

That's because permissions for the files are set to Read Only. Right click the folder and uncheck the Read Only box under properties. That's pretty common when files are copied off of a CD.

do as said above, but that shouldnt really matter, it would just ask another confirmation as to if you would like to delete the files which are marked as READ ONLY.

Do this only if you are on an administrator account:
Goto the security tab, remove every user in the list, apply, click Advanced, and go though all the tabs, removing any users in the lists.

Finaly, goto the Owner tab, and add your user which your logged onto now.
Then goto the permissions tab, add your user, and choose the FULL CONTROL field under allow. Click inheritable permissions on the bottom of that page, and click ok and wait for it too apply those permissions.

Double check in the general security window that your user has full access, say ok, and then delete away.

Its ok, you don't like everything, and everyone doesn't like you, so it balances out.

note: the above assumes you're in the file properties window for the said folder.

Actually I would add myself for full control before removing any other entires just in case the PC burped or something. Admins can locdk themselves out of folders, it can be embarassing having to track down some peon who does have privileges. :>

have you used CTRL-ALT-DEL to close a program that was accessing this file? Has your computer been shutdown incorrectly? It sounds to me like this is another instance of Microsoft's shitty implementation of a file system. This problem is common when the file handle is left open, or this information is corrupted. Try going into DOS and typing format d: /u replacing d: with the drive the offending file is on. This will warn you that you are going to destroy all data and ask you to confirm the volume label, enter this. You will then be warned that all opened files will be rendered unusable, press Y to this. You should then see your drive formatting... 1% just use CTRL-C to break out of this operation and the format will have done no harm. The file that had the corrupt file handle should be deletable at this point. If this file is on your boot device, then you should schedule scandisk to run on next startup and reboot.

i have copied dozens of folders off cds and have never seen that error.
how about checking the processes, to make sure that a file in that folder is not in use or too see if there are any processes running that are odd.
