  • Linux and the Superbowl

Anyone else still trying to figure out the meaning of the commercial for Linux during the Superbowl? You got this kid who seems spooky, watching TV, watching Muhammad Ali from the 60's, then poof the TV is gone and Ali is right there in front of him, older, slower, and it is obvious the poor man can barely manage his lines, the kid smiles, and then it fades to the word Linux.

    Please explain, anyone?

I'm with you astcell, I can't figure it out either.

Muhammad Ali was telling "Linux" to shake things up, meaning the O/S is going to take the world by storm.

I'm glad to see Linux taking a much more agressive PR line in the last year, but they definately need to hire a better PR firm. They haven't launched a commercial that I think is appealing yet.

I know what Linux needs. Remember when you could only buy a computer nude (no OS)? And if you wanted the OS you needed DOS to load Windows?

Imagine if CompUSA had the same computer for either $699 for it with Linux or $799 for it with Windows.

Well, maybe Bill would compete against Linux the way he competed against Netscape - give the product away.

            Doesn't Walmart do this already?

They only have Windoze PCs from what I see. I dare you to ask a Wally World employee what version of OS they have, watch for the deer in the headlights look. :>

I thought Wal Mart was selling Lindows shit boxes too? I never checked though.

You can buy them from their web site. I think they actually have more than one flavor of linux and you can buy them without an OS. I doubt if they are in stores.

That's a dangerous look to have in a Wal Mart. If it's deer season (sometimes "jes a lil before" or "no to fah after") you're likely to be taken down by a rifle or bow and arrow from the sporting goods department.

I've seen them in a couple of stores, but they don't really seem to be making much of an effort to sell them. FWIW, Fry's was also carrying a similar item, but they weren't Lycoris- or Lindows-based. Can't remember the name of the distro they were using, but I seem to remember it was Taiwanese and designed specifically for desktop use. Again, no real effort was put into selling them.

And to be perfectly honest, I'm not surprised... For 90% of desktop users, there's no real reason to use Linux (or any other OS) compared to Windows.

I read this and a few days ago went to my local wally world to check it out nude comps or linux OS...they dont have them in stores for the lack of sales, but they give you a wal-mart order form to order the comp and Linux, which the price for the comp and linux was $200 cheaper then the ones in stock with Windoze...
