I'm sure you're all sick of hearing about the Atkins diet. This was an interesting revelation:

Founder of Atkins diet 'was obese when he died'

Apparently he was about 6' tall and weighed approximately 260 pounds at the time of his death.

The only thing I have ever felt on this WOE is much more energy, reduction of weight, better concentration, reduction of mood swings, healthy appearance, increased capacity to retain learned information, reduced hunger, and increased endurance.

I friend of mine did the Atkins thing. He lost about 75lbs, but after being off Atkins for a year it all came back.

So it doesn't surprise me that the founder was obese when he died.

It's like any diet.. you go on it an lose weight, you have to work to keep it off. It amazes me how many people will pig out to celebrate losing weight, then wonder why they get fat again..

The diet did work for me, I dumped 40lbs on it. Yes, I have to watch what I eat and exercise or I will gain it back.. its called genetics.

I find it funny that his wife was offended when mayor bloomberg called him fat and she wanted an appology, as if you goto the doctor and he(or she) says that you are fat are they going to appologize afterwards? No, I dont think so.

Personally, I think there's a bigger issue here.

No matter what you may think about the diet or Dr. Atkins, it's outrageous that the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine "which advocates vegetarian diets and is strenuously opposed to the Atkins diet" would violate medical privacy to further their own belief system.

Whether they are right or wrong about the science behind the diet, this is a completely unethical action by a group of physicians who ought to know better. It was hardy "responsible" by any definition of the word.

It may help you lose weight, but there's no way it's healthy. But as much as I think the atkins diet is a bunch of crap. Read this:

So when he died he was 260. Maybe before he started his diet he was 550?

I've tried the Atkins diet, lost like 4 lbs, not much of a difference. Worth a try though.

I went from 268 to 205, tough to stay low afterwards.

I would suggest to those who have the feeling it is unhealthy, bad for you, a diet, or listening to others about how a person will die by staying on this diet read the new book, and the medical research supporting the Atkin's plan. The truth is, this is not a meat and cheese diet. Its not a diet at all, its a way of eating. Sure, in the beginning the weight melts off, but a person needs to change their mindset for life, not for the amount of time it takes to drop the weight.

You see, because you are changing your diet for a long period of time, you move through several different levels of lifestyle eating. In the beginning, it is mainly meats, and veggies. Then as you move through the stages you add more veggies, fruits, nuts, grains, etc...

Personally, I cannot support the ideal that this is an unhealthy WOE for me. Before, the only veggies I consumed were the lettuce, pickle, tomato, and onion on my double cheeseburger(+ fries) from Wendy's.

why dont people just change their mindset about who they are and not worry about what they look like.
trying to do this for health reason is understandable, but just because you do lose weight doesnt mean you will live a long life.
just means when its your time to die you will die a little healthier.
me i would rather enjoy life and eat what i want, then have to worry about what i eat.

That's perhaps my biggest gripe with the Atkins diet... its focus is entirely on losing weight and not on improving health.

The Atkins diet has been responsible for outbreaks of scurvy and has a nasty side effect of increasing cholesterol, despite Dr. Atkins claims that it will lower cholesterol.

There are so many simple lifestyle changes that can be made to eat healthier which aren't necessarily "a diet", such as cutting out fast food, buying low fat counterparts to certain products, eating less red meat and eating more fish, which when coupled with an exercise regiment will cause gradual but permanent weight loss. It just seems that most Americans are unwilling to make permanent lifestyle changes and would prefer a quick-fix diet solution like Atkins...
