Mapquest sucks. I hope you aren't planning on traveling across the United States using MapQuest.

And why drive? Why not fly? In the end it will be cheaper.

For Driving Directions, use AAA and get a TripTik

        Things to remember about driving:

        a) money: gas, tolls, food, hotels if not driving with others to keep the vehicle in motion at all times
        b) time: flying = 1/2 a day, driving will likely be a solid 4 days coming from Nova Scotia (13-15 hours per day)... time == money? also don't forget that unless you do like me and stay out on the west coast, you have to drive back.. 4 solid days after defcon will fell more like 6-8 solid days... ask highwizard.
        c) vehicle: not sure if your rush to mapquest is a measure of green or not, but you're going to want to start out with a fully tuned vehicle that can actually make the trip there and back; then you will want to consider some type of roadside plan to help you out in the case that the vehicle randomly craps out on you or <insert-unexpected>
        d) <insert-unexpected> Renderman and crew have quite a few story to tell about their defcon adventure from Canada last year...

The cool thing about driving is that you do have the opportunity to see all the states you pass through, meet interesting people at local food places, hotels, etc. For me, reaching the Hoover Damn was a peak of accomplishment in the drive; knowing defcon was within reach with such a nationally excepted landmark under my feet. (yes, I do recommend getting out and stretching, eh zulumoose?) Other than that, consider flying :)
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

...And which I'm still paying off.

Nova Scotia is probobly way too far for most people. As Con mentioned, the drive back after partying all week is one of the most painful things I've ever endured without bleeding profusly from a gaping wound.

Fly, it's just saner. Plus you can sleep off the hangover on the flight home and not have to worry.

BTW, I use Mappoint since I have it on my laptop anyways for wardriving.

Plane is probably the best plan

Mapquest for travelling not a chance, just for basic reference. VERY Basic :) I'm a little green but not that green. I use mappoint on my laptop as well.

the geography in NS, is making plane travel look like the best bet.

there is a boat the CAT that goes to maine from yarmouth. and cuts off a day of travel

I have never been to Defcon so the plane ride would save me the pain and suffering of driving home. Maybe I'll try a road trip another time, and just fly. i'll take the good advise of: renderman

              ----------------------------------|
And now I use PGP HEHE |

And if what I heard on the news this morning is anything to go by, we can expect $3/gallon gas prices this summer due to the usual gouging the oil companies perform while school's out. This is a strong argument for flying, particularly if you're driving thousands of miles each way.

Hell, I'm only four hours out of Vegas, and I'm not looking forward to driving it this year. And I love driving.

Remember when you drive you need to convert a lot of numbers. The exhange rate is not that good, but gas is cheaper in the US, however remember we have different gallons as well, stick to the litre numbers.

I read once that there is a city in Canada in the middle of no where and apparently the entire town is set up for Fiber or T3. Heard of it? Maybe they can sponsor your trip.

Oh, and you just HAVE to wardrive your route for us!

Wardriving too DEFCON would be serious business "Serious Fun", requiring serious funds, like you said "A sponsor"

I think the town is Orangeville, Ontario, Canada

I can't be certain but they have a slew of high-speed data transfer lines like Cable, ISDN, DSL, ADSL, Cable, ISDN, SDSL, T1, T3, and Megalink. Bell Canada administrator's all that.

                    Most company's
Finding a sponsor in canada would be an interesting challenge
I've read that there are towns in the US that have large wireless zones on T1 Backbones. That would be Good Times for wardriving.

This is becoming fairly common in rural areas - ISPs use it to get broadband out to areas that can only otherwise get ISDN or dialup. There are a few technologies in use, but the popular one seems to be Broadcom's 802.11 implementation. Note that this isn't the same as 802.11a, b, or g, so no wardriving it without several thousand dollars' worth of Broadcom gear.

Now, the APs that the 802.11 CPE receivers sometimes drop down to are another story.

Don't worry about it. You would'nt have been much use unless you were driving a tow truck.

A quick mappoint check shows the drive from Halifax to Vegas would be just over 5100Km (3170 miles). Do yourself and FLY! (and I though my driving 2500 Km was nuts)
