Who cares about getting sniffed... install a clean version of linux/windows and use it for what you want. Dont plug your business laptop into any network wired/wireless. And also do go paying your bills while you're there either.

To surf the net without going to any authenticated websites... I see no harm, just assume everything you do many people are just capturing the data, but there still will be those few who will go on the internet checking their email and forums and the kiddies will have your credentials.

We'll need different "sheep corrals." Who got sniffed on 802, who got sniffed on rtoom ethernet, who got their verizon wireless hacked, it's be nice to see a breakdown.

IM someone you're next to.....I do that shit at home already. Its a fucking vacation and 3-5 day drunken binge. If you are sober enough to type, you're doing it wrong.

Apart from demonstrating realtime security, why would you want to be online at DEFCON anyway? It's a vacation... a chance to party, mingle, and romp! Waste you're time online before and after the con... not during it! Your email can wait a day or two. ;)

The in room in safe enough to use. The only problem I noticed was the billing system didn't seem to work so good. It isn't any worse than the WiFi network.

When I was there last November the rooms all had the hardware, but not the connections. The company that installe dthem is not happy about the idea of people like s hammer the back of the hotel with WiFi.

I imagine they really don't like the idea of people dropping an AP onto the connection . Can't imagine anyone doing that at all at Defcon.

Also remembe rthat for every malicious prick out there trying to abuse and trash something liek the in room ethernet, there's somebody older ad wiser robably surfin the same exploits looking for those pricks.

Who thinks the network would stay up long enough for you to try anything anyways.

There's a reason that last year, the network was'nt going live until the week AFTER defcon.

I don't think portsniffing a private ethernet is as ethical as is monitoring traffic on a 802 that's your own. The AP has their own ether access as far as I know

I have never had any luck from my AP room at the last several con's to get stable wireless internet access.

I suppose I could just call and confirm.

Even if it was, would you use it? Can you afford to be on the wall of sheep?
