  • WarDriving F.U.D.

This aired on our local news tonight. I'm sure the "Consultant" used it to spread fear to drum up some business for himself. I'm really pissed right now so I'll keep it short.

Please be sure to e-mail this reporter and tell him next time try not to be taken for a sucker and ask for real advice from the hackers in his backyard.

I don't know which is worse -- that it's a fine example of hype-laden mainstream wireless security "investigative news", or that these folks are a solid year behind everyone else in the country who's already done the "Wardrivers Are Hacking Your Network" story.

This kind of article could almost be useful. Despite what seems like constant hype for the past year or so, too many people could still use a reminder that wireless networks aren't secure by default. But I'd strike a bunch of "OHMYGODHACKERS AAAAAAAGGGH" from that article, and replace it with even just two paragraphs pointing out how easy it is to add minimal security to a wireless network.

    My favorite part:

"Oh my! So, you're online with my computer system? They've broken in, Bob. "
Sunday on Lifetime: "When Wardrivers Attack."

Postal might not be the right word to describe how Chris might feel after he sees the part on warchalking.

        Homicidal might be better.

Only one year? We *are* up to 2004 now, right?

warchax0ring rools. it takes skillz man.. and chalk

public service announcement: the church of wifi does not condone the use of chalk during 802.11 exploration. warchalking has been found to be a leading cause of lameness and should not be done around children, pregnant women, or anyone in Chris' line of site that wishes to remain breathing.
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

I picked the wrong time to view the video, I was at work and I'm bitching at the monitor as I'm watching it. I'm quite sure the reporter's inbox is going to have quite a few e-mails in reguards to this. I've sent off at least 2 of them and I know of a couple others that are doing the same thing.

I have actually decided to wait until Sunday evening to email this fucker. I want to send a coherent critique of his piece rather than a profanity laced rant which will be quickly dumped into his delete bin.

I'm already way in front of you Chris, I'm sure my e-mail got red flaged before it even hit him. I should've CC'd you on it, you would've been proud :D

I did NOT send it from the miwi account though so I'll be sending him something else from that one but less profane, it'll take a lot of beers to do this so Sunday may be best also.

I just hope that when he gets to my email(s), that I don't have people trying to knock down my door.

(It might be bad to have as many email accounts as i do, expressiveness seems to flow/happen when I don't like something and that can be very bad)

For example, watch this, of the 200+ networks we found driving around, we found one named ###### ###### #####"

Having your full name as your SSID and then on top of that not enabling WEP encryption is one hell of a class act.

What exactly is so wrong with that book. I'm a certified CISSP and I thought it was pretty well written and informative. It wasn't just a whole lotta shiznit like most of those kind of books are.
