    for those of you who haven't seen, microsoft has canned their upcoming next generation security architecture, codenamed palladium. linux advocates everywhere rejoyce that hardware will remain open and not under the control of m$:

      heh... right. so they realized that they actually need a point to releasing longhorn because absolutely _no one_ is interested in shelling out for a pile of gui updates and bloat without some sort of technical kickback

      .... this isn't really security though.. just boring Microsoft banter
      if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

        Longhorn will provide a much richer development environment, especially with technologies like XAML and Avalon. XAML will allow applications to be transparently executed from the web/a central server (in a manner quite different from remote X display). The other major consideration is that this is the first desktop operating system completely developed after Microsoft's "Trustworthy Computing" initiative began, and if they rewrite the majority of OS components as managed code (as the proported hardware requirements of 2GB of RAM and a dual core 4GHz-6GHz processor would lead you to believe) then traditional buffer overflow security holes will be eliminated.

        Longhorn will be a complete paradigm shift in Windows program, and in my opinion, while it's a Faustian bargain with the resource requirements, it's certainly a shift in the right direction.
