I cant find anyone locally that is interested in going to defcon. I have never been, but have wanted to go since dc9 (when i heard about it)

Have you considered Flying? You can probably get a cheap airfare and then just go for room sharing.

never take greyhound. NEVER. just fly. fuck man, airfare in the united states is SO cheap, you could go from any hick town to vegas for a freakin' great price, and being that SWA caters to the cheapass, you can STILL book for little.

St. Louis sucks, there are no meetings, and half of this state is literally dead.

First of all Saint Louis does not suck, we have a 2600 group and we are organizing the MW2600 group. We are also the home of the MWA 'Zine. www.mw2600.org


Second there is a "caravan" leaving Missouri, for details email aestetix@[NOSPAM]aestetix.net. I am flying, but as I said, there is a small "caravan" leaving the Show Me State.


Thirdly, most states only have 'activity' in the metro areas. If you get outside the St. Louis/Kansas City areas Missouri is pretty much dead with exception of the University of Missouri College towns; but, you can't knock Missouri for being 'half dead' most states have the same issue.

I took a Greyhound from Palm Springs to Monterey, about 7 hour drive on your own. It was 14 hours of hell. Please do not take Greyhound unless you get your own bus. It is definitely third world travel.

I dunno... Having spent time on buses in third world countries, comparing them to Greyhound seems kinda unfair to the third world buses ;)

Seriously, though, fuck Greyhound. I tried to get from San Francisco to L.A. a little over three years ago by train. Lo and behold, the train stopped about 40 minutes out of SF and - as part of the regular service (thanks for the nonexistent advance warning about this, Amtrak) - dumped us all out onto a bus that took nearly 13 hours to complete a 5-hour drive.

Did I mention that this was in August, largely through the San Joaquin Valley in 100degF temperatures, and that the crapper stench was permeating the entire cabin (the passenger windows don't open, incidentally). Even with the cabin fans on (run the a/c? Hell no, the driver's got his window so screw the passengers) it really only served to push the smell around rather than actually dissipate it.

Then there's the time I had to go to SF from LA to pick up my car and wound up in Oakland at 5am because Greyhound decided that we could wait for the BART to start running rather than actually drive into the fucking city...

Actually, if you have the time, gas money, a car that can make it, and friends willing to keep you company, the roadtrip from Missouri to DefCon is superb. A crew from St. Louis drove it last year, and although 29 hours in a car sounds long (and Kansas is horrible), the hours through the Rockies and Utah make it so so so worth it. I flew to DefCon X.... you miss so much of the experience flying, it's indescribable.

Grayhound is notoriously unreliable. I took a bus from Virginia to St. Louis, supposed to be a 19 hour ride, wound up being a 24 hour ride because the transmission blew on the first bus somewhere around Knoxville (hour wait for a new bus), and we had a flat tire in Illinois about 40 minutes away from the St. Louis bus station (four hour delay). My brother took a bus to Santa Fe, and the driver took a wrong turn that cost them like three hours in delay.

Now as far as the "St. Louis sucks!" comment.... there are a lot of things factoring into this. First, St. Louis is a heavily disjointed city-- you can't get around to a lot of places without a car. It's a very conservative city, which means a lot of people are really apathetic, even so-called meeting-goers. Third, the meetings are held in an extremely sux0ring mall, but there are changes in the works. Stop whining and submit an article to the next MWA issue *nudge wink*

For KC-ers.... the drive from St. Louis goes directly through KC, so it would definately be possible to synchronize either a carpool or a caravan of some sort.

I really hope I misinterpreted this. You miss out on the Defcon experience, or you miss out on driving in a loaded car for 20+ hours with people whose hygiene may be questionable so that you can arrive in Vegas exhausted to attend a conference that you arguably will NOT SLEEP during.

I've done the long drives going from WA to MN, NE to WA, and MN to TX. Everyone of those driving experiences sucked compared to the luxury of flying 2.5 hours. I will abolutely be flying if for no other reason to avoid being stuck in a compact car with bozo the wonder colon who loves 7-11 burritos and shares them through a secondary channel with the rest of the vehicle.

LMFAO. I love long roadtrips..... especially when you spend all night driving through the Rockies with DnB blaring and have the sunrise lighting up the desert. Plus, with a carfull of geeks, there's no telling what kinds of bizarre conversations you can have, especially if you've never actually met them before. And sleep deprivation is definately part of the con experience, although last year when I finally did crash apparently there was an orgy going on in the other bed in our room. :/ 'sides, when did geeks ever care about hygiene?
