For christmas i recived the emachines m5305 laptop. It seemed to be real nice at first, its a 2.0gig AMD, Radeon processer, 512mb ddr ram, runing windows xp and xandros linux 2.0, and madrake 9.2. The motherboard on it was replaced too after i recieved it. I am now having problems with it over heating and shutting down when running lots of programs, or downloading a lot. Also it wont play games like counterstrike or diablo anymroe it will overheat in 5 minutes tehn shut down. I was wondering if anyone can give me some inishgt on what to do b/c my warrenty is up and i need to fix this problem teh cheapest way possible. Thank yout oo all that can be of help.

I use linux most of the time. I am only in xp if i am downloading or using photoshop and 3d studio. I am not overclocking it either. It also runs fine even when a lot of stuff is open, it jsut over heats and turns off. mostly it turns off when playing a game with no other programs running. My freinds say i need to see a doctor b/c i talk in zeros and ones...

What the hell kind of bullshit warranty is that? What was it, 90 days or something?perl -e 'print pack(c5, (41*2), sqrt(7056), (unpack(c,H)-2), oct(115), 10)'

I have some experience with heat related instability under my belt, not saying im the know it all or anything. What i have seen in several scenarios is that when a new machine is purchased, its runs fine and then a month later you get, "my system is restarting on its own, it might be overheating i think. whats the problem?" And sure enough, you open it up and the heatsink is all clogged with nasty dust and when its cleaned out the problem is alleviated. This could be applied to a laptop as well i believe. So you could try airing out any dust in your Laptop. Then again, your problem might not even be "heat" related at all. Try running Sisoft Sandra and checking what temp(under stress) your running at to be sure.
Also, you should go into your control panel and go into System>Advanced>Settings under Startup and recovery and disable automatic restart if you havent already. That will enable you to see(if you are getting them) any BSOD(Blue screen of death), and possibly find out what is responsible. With auto restart you cant see what the error is.

I recommend the Area-51m™ Extreme. It is one very sweet laptop and you can add extra features to it depending on what you need or can afford.
*Alienware is not cheap, but like jesse said you get what you paid for*"It is difficult not to wonder whether that combination of elements which produces a machine for labor does not create also a soul of sorts, a dull resentful metallic will, which can rebel at times". Pearl S. Buck

If one OS is running the others arnt doing jack squat, so they wouldnt be taking up memory. And i think he is having all around general problems with his laptop, not just linux problems but windows problems as well, but i dunno cause his post is somewhat unclear if you delve into it that far, because you dont have to be in Windows to play counterstrike or diablo.

My system runs fine it just has the problem of over heating, i have cleaned it with can of air many times, and there is no way in hell i would get an apple computer. i have looked into the alienware ones befor, but for right now they are way expensive for what i make now. What i will prolly end up doing after i am into college and all is buy a new oen adn leave the laptop for a web server or something along those lines. My freinds say i need to see a doctor b/c i talk in zeros and ones...
