    People always cancle

Call AP and ask what time they will be releasing the cancelled and no-show rooms.
Also if you looking for a cheap place to crash that is close to AP try the Howard Johnson (airport).

I don't know if subjecting yourself to #dc-stuff is worth a room :)
(You can try #dc-forums... but as the name suggests most of those folk are on here also.)

Now the AP is completely sold out. The legendarily-curteous lady on the phone informed me that they're not taking names for cancellations, and I should basically play roulette and call back "periodically."

Am I screwed? Should I start looking for love elsewhere? When is a good time to try and pick up a cancellation room? (I was thinking perhaps closer to the con would bring more luck.)

This year I did the smart thing and got a room early... seems I'm getting all responsible in my old age.

The western casino is truly a cultural experience.

Inside are the hadcore degenerate gamblers, male and female - it doesn' discriminate. Dealers typically wear a uniform of, what they were wearing before they came to work. If you gamble $5 a hand you're a whale.

Outside is a parade of gang members dealing crack, two-bit prostitutes too ugly for the escort services, and drunk and/or homeless. Even the cops don't ride their bikes down that far along freemont, usually stopping at those cement cylinders in the ground.

They seem to act as an imaginary border and he riff-raff know now to cross in, and the gentle folk know not to cross over. I often wonderered if the husband and wife with their two 11 and 13 year old children would be walking around so casually if they really knew that not more than 50 feet away someone was buying crack for $20 a baggie and some-body else was arranging for a quick $50 blowjob.

I have never seen a room or stayed at their motel, but I will give he utmost respect to anyone who ever did.

    Other places

If you're going to make reservations at the surrounding hotels listed in the hotel FAQ, call directly and say you're with defcon. They've made arraignments with them. I'm at the Embassy Suites (like the free breakfast, and the cook there, plus bring family I wouldn't put in the Alexis), and the rate on Expedia was 129-169 a night, while the defcon rate was 115 a night. MUCH better. But friday night is already sold out for the Swenson Ave venue.

Well, the latest you can cancel to get a full refund is 3 days before the con. So you may want to keep that in mind when looking for a cancellation.

I just booked a room at the St Tropez on expedia; it was $260-ish for the weekend.
