  • End-to-end cell phone encryption

How long until this is widespread? Many other person-to-person contact media such as AIM are offering public key encryption... it would certainly be nice if cell phones afforded it as well

Not until the cellphone companies see some form of lost profit from not offering such a service.

It's easy to use encryption for email wouldn't you say? How many people actually use it ? Besides tech savy people, not many. Granted it is starting to enjoy more widespread usage, but as a whole, email is not encrypted (by joe user)-

If you really wanna know, there's a company in Germany (with financiers from the Netherlands) offering a smartphone that uses the GSM data channel to sent encrypted voice and data. You can call others with same software. The software can also be run on a PC with modem.
      Check out http://www.cryptophone.de/

And no, I'm not linked to them in any way.
      Just like the initiative.

There is a GSM phone supporting encryption

Crypto AG a company from switzerland offers a GSM phone supporting encryption. See http://www.crypto.ch/pages/htm/crypt...secure_gsm.htm

Demand for this doesn't seem too high though. And since there is pretty good accountability for the usage of a cell phone I think it is not a good idea to use it for something sensitive anyway.

You can use a cheap SOHO firewall and have encryption. Heck, you can chat using W2K and be secure. How about the CE phones?
