The only purpose I can see to 10 being released when it was, was to get folks 'used' to udev before it goes into 'real' use with 10.1.

It seems like nobody in the Linux world is really happy with udev; I know I'm not, and Slackware should (in theory) be one of the easier distributions to implement it on.

I still run slackware 9.1 and heavily recommend it over 9.0... I would recommend 8.1 over 9.0.
9.1 was a big improvement over 9.0. I'd actually take 10 over 9.0, but only for running a 2.4-series box and having all the important bits of base software (openssl, openssh, samba, etc.) updated in one handy location. Other than that, 10 doesn't offer much over 9.1 IMHO.

Also, to give you some idea in making your choice:

Slackware 8 came out in (IIRC) late 2001 / early 2002. It was the last 2.2-based release (2.2.19; I know this much for fact as I reinstalled an older laptop with it a couple of nights ago). 8.1 introduced the 2.4-series kernel to Slack, which was the stock kernel series for 9 and 9.1 as well.

10 is also 2.4-based (2.4.26, to be exact) and brings in the 2.6 series with 2.6.7, but only in testing - it's included on the second CD, but you can't install it through the regular installer: you have to use pkgtool to install it manually.

Quite frankly, 2.6 is a giant disappointment in my book. I hate udev intensely, and it's problems with udev that are preventing me from getting the benefits out of the 2.6 series on the hardware that could actually benefit from it.

I'd say go with 10 from the standpoint of having a more recent collection of supporting software, but stick with the 2.4-series kernels for now. Until udev stops being an abject pain in the ass to live with, you'll most likely be better off in 2.4 land.

The newer it is the more support you will have for it so you will have a much more smooth install. I dont have the link right now but c0nverge has a Slackware 9.0 install guide that is superb.
