Im not a big fan of java... programming friends of mine don't have much to say about it either... A lot of schools and such are starting to switch over to it....
With that all said, I don't know much about programming myself and picked up a book on C. With the amount of OS's, Programs and exploits written using this language, the wealth of people that learn it.. and the input from friends... I think that C/C++ is the best language to learn. I plan on taking some C++ classes in the near future and have enjoyed starting my book.
I regret not learning it earlier when I had a chance but turned it down to pursue networking stuff...
        Good luck.

          Start with what you have

If you have a linux/bsd/nix box start with bourne shell scripting
If you have winders try windows shell scripting

Second stage move up to Perl
If you have linux box it comes with linux
If you have macosx it comes with it.
If you have Winders google for "Active State Perl"

          good luck

This is good advice, but it depends almost enitirely on what kind of applications the programmer is interested. For example, if the student is interested in music and wants programming to augment their pursuit of digital music you must suggest a different line of study than if the student is interested in robotics.

Other than that I always wonder why it is people are more willing to take pseudo random advice from total strangers on the internet than they are to listen to their own hearts.

It's all about what flavor of math has you hooked.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Trying to code by hand in IA64 assembly is like trying to open a jar of pickles with a nuclear bomb.

Argument ad populam... just because something is popular doesn't make it good.

Personally I think C#/.NET will eclipse Java, especially considering it allows you to link legacy C++ code together with C# code.

And here I am waiting for Lisp or Scheme to make a comeback, but unfortunately they're a bit much for the average douchebag to wrap their brain around.

Dear God this post struck like the words of a prophet for some reason. 32 to 64 bit, ATA to SATA, 10/100 to 100/1000 gigabit cards everything old is becoming obsolete, technology is upgrading and expanding in new ways. Ok sorry about that rant it just struck me in an odd manor so I digress.

                          Back to thread:
I started with HTML and Java and moved to C language then Perl and have only lately been toying with LISP and Extensible Markup Language (XML)

I recommend if you want to learn a language buy a book or go to college for a class in your preferred language. The only problem with the latter is that college classes go at their pace and if you take a remedial in language like an 095 level they are going to baby you which is frustrating to have people treat you like a child.
                          Did Everquest teach you that?

ewww. please don't talk about scheme anymore.

I understand it, and I can code some small scripts with it (only spent a week and a half learning it in AP computer science), but blargh. What a discusting language.

Who cares if it's faster or more effecient or whatever, still hurts my brain.

                              Advice

I was a beginner once so i know how you feel.
1.Try to stick with one langauge and then master it.
2.Dont worry if your computer is old older versions of windows and WMP are good for hijacking computers.
3.Cover your tracks well thats a big DUH!
4.Dont go in over your head and try to do big hacks
                              5.Use viruscrackrz.tripod.com/ViRusTools.htm
6.If your doing some big hacks dont do it at home! Use a public phone.
                              7. If u want to get anything done learn how to phone phreak.(The book The Art Of Deception)
