How in the world did this thread degrade?

The info that murakami posted is good info for people looking for an Linux/Oracle alternative to Red Hat. I swear to God, sometimes I think you guys will bitch about anything.

I only mention the XP like GUI is because they have so completely copied XP/Server 2003 that at first glance you can't tell the difference even from the install screens. The balls out attitude of the People's Republic of China's copyright infringement on Windows makes me laugh. Also, Oracle's very open support of a product that copies Windows server also makes me giggle.

Redhat is a fine distribution and works just dandy as long as you do it the Red Hat way. The same can be said for Windows. However, there is a cost and licensing issue with Red Hat and Suse. Asianux is a free alternative that supports a big part of the corporate software market.

Looks more like Win9x to me ;) BTW, I'm a big fan of WindowMaker. (And yes, I did read you don't care about the GUI as much as Oracle. I wouldn't know because I don't use Oracle. So, I'll take your word on that one.)

Having linux look like WinXP is just stupid; one of the MANY things i loathe the most on windows is the GUI , its also one of the horrible components that one deals with the most....

Its my opinion that if you use KDE, you should just go back to winblows....
Theres plenty of options out there.. thats the beauty of *nix.....

I don't give a shit about the GUI.

If you have ever tried to install Oracle on anything else than Red Hat, then you what a huge pain in the ass linux can be in a server envronment. There are not plenty of options for Oracle ... that's my point.

Why don't you go back to whatever distro you like and play with your LAMPS crap.

Surely you cant praise a distro without some screenshots =) (im all about eye candy)What kind of package management does it use? Do you have to manually upgrade software, patches?

After I've had a little time to poke at it, it feels like Red Hat 8 or 9. Unfortunately, there isn't any package management, but the Red Flag distro that is based on Asianux is supposed to have one. I probably wouldn't use it on a daily basis. My main goal was to install Oracle painlessly, which it does quite nicely.

Not a question but a recommendation.

For folks that need to run a United Linux based distro, Asianux (Miracle or Red Flag) is a nice distro with a definite windows look and feel. If you are like me and need Oracle on linux for development and hate forking money over money to Redhat, Novell, SCO or any of the other United Linux distributers for a development box, then Asianux is the only free alternative.

Install was ridculously easy, as was tweaking system settings. Sh*t, samba and nbmn is on at default and I could browse the windows machines on the network immediately. The default GUI is KDE but a straight knock off of WinXP.

To paraphrase the Dixe Flatline, " It speaks good English, too."

However, the Kuang Grade Mark 11 is extra.
