Well, I'll just assume some stuff about where you work.

1) Make sure to put porn links on the left, your employees need to know their competition.
2) Put massive amounts of mp3's online, people like their music
3) Make a link called "secret area" and have it link to goatse
4) Make an employee directory, but fill it with fake info

You don't need to target search engines when creating intranet pages.

People will abandon a www site if it's too complex, but businesses are often the opposite, they can train people to use the software if the complexity gives them more/better info.

You've usually got unlimited bandwidth, unless you have to support people on the road or connecting over modems.

Sometimes you can control the browser, but that's bad design practice.

I wasn't asking anything about search engine targeting, placement or otherwise. All I was asking about is a book or a web site that covered effective intranet design. I'm in the process of creating an intranet site at work and want it to be as useful as possible.

You may want to check out this book:

ISBN: 0-201-72149-X


Don't let the "Customer-Centered", part turn you off. I found that this book works well for non-customer centered stuff as well.
