You left some words out of your response:

Yeah, (with) money (you can get) sucks.

I don't hate Microsoft because they are rich, I hate them because they are evil. At least more evil than I am, and I am very much into competition.

Remember when the service packs used to actually fix problems...er wait...scratch that.

With all due respect to my comrades here, the correct answer to the question is to ask why you didn't read the release notes for SP2 before installing it. Within the known issues and 'things you should know' it mentions that SP2 turns on firewalling by default and is incompatible with some VPN software, at least Cisco, which has caused many IT departments to ask their users NOT to install it to prevent just this scenario.

You have landed in the hotbed of opensource zealots and asked a question where going to the source would have provided you with far greater satisfaction. May I suggest either msdn or technet? You could just go to the microsoft site and search for various combinations of "XP SP2 VPN Fails" - eventually you will end up at useful information. I however, will need to charge you $400 per hour with a 4 hour minimum in order to assist you.

Don't forget, with Microsoft, it's all about the money baby...

Yes, but if the PC is on a domain the box will be grayed out, same with spammers controlling his box. Heck, sometimes I get grayed out boxes for no reason.

But if he is not going to research this, the most common XP2 issue, he has a long road up ahead.

Actually, no. It's a "feature" of SP2. You have to go into the security centre thing and uncheck every option about being notified, allowing traffic, etc. It's quite the pain in the ass.

Before I install any software I like to google "(name of software package) sucks."

    Examples are:
    XP Service Pack 2 sucks
    Gentoo sucks
    Windowsd 95 OSR2 sucks
    ...and so on.

You will get a chance to hear all the horror stories possible this way, and then make notes so that you wil not be one of them.

If you truly cannot disable the firewall then I can narrow it down to one of twon things. Either you are not the administrator and have no permissions to access the firewall settings, or some spyware has grabbed hold of your PC and locked you out of a handful of settings. This can be corrected in the registry and with various other hacks. I would rather leave you with this information, it sounds like you are playing with things you do not know and I do not feel comfortable handing you more information. In this case, too much informatioin is dangerous.

Based on the title of your post, can we assume you are using FTP? I'm also going to assume you are using Internet Explorer as your client (wild half-assed guess).

Is your server timing out or is it really your client timing out? I'm going to assume you mean the client since I don't think you are in charge of the servers.

    Yes it will...

...but, since it is probably a good thing in your case, I'm not going to help you do it.

A quick search for "windows firewall ftp" indicates that you can (probably) solve your problem by:
    • Opening Internet Explorer
    • Select "Tools/Internet Options..." from the menu
    • Select the "Advanced" tab
    • Enable the "Use Passive FTP" option

    Good luck.

I can't log in to my computer using Office either. You're damned good if you can. Maybe you need to think about what you are asking first, because your post made no sense. However to take a gander at your question, remember than XP Service Pack 2 sets up the firewall by default, and you need to let the computer share with the Internet again.
