High Speed, Low Drag IBM Thinkpad's?

As the happy owner of an IBM Thinkpad 600X I want something considerably smaller, but still able to run Windows 2000, (500-700mhz P3) for those occasional Powerpoint presentations and to run another OS of my choice.

I know such a beast exists, I am just not aware of all the various Thinkpad models short of the ones I have owned. (560X and 600X)

I'm afraid that the 600X is probably the best form factor/speed. I own a couple of 600X, a T40p and a A31m. I've also had a couple of T20's in the past. The only thing smaller would probably be a X series TP and while they are OK, I wasn not impressed enough to purchase one. While not smaller, a T20 series would be a good bet, especially they have an all alloy shell.

I have a 600x love the little guy, with 300mhz and a lite window manager I get some nice results. I got a better laptop a 2ghz Toshiba, however I am not a huge fan of modern laptops other then ibm. I find new laptops to be cheaply made and flimsy, I remember old school 486 laptops, like a damn brick, now I feel like if i type to hard it might break the Toshi. I wish we could move back to the old skool style, this new thing is pissing me off. I hope that soon there will be all metal laptops not this POS plastic crap they are pushing off on me.

on a side note, we have gotten a truck load of these T42's in and i must say they have been nothing but a problem so far, HDD crashing, NIC failure etc..
some of the software issues that i have seen are mostly in part of the image so i wont even bring those up.

I'm a big fan of Thinkpads, but our T40's seem to have had more problems (hard drive crash, cdrom failures, power supply cords fraying, misc plastic chipping on the bottom part of the case) than previous models.

i bought myself a sweet averatec 3150H a little less than a year ago and it has been by far the best laptop i have had, and it is super small :

I have had no problems with this machine so far at all, it is fast ,super portable, the battery lasts 3 hours of video playback.

Thinkpad Decline

I'm in a full mobile environment and all we use is Thinkpads. I liked them before i came to work here though. We've had the same problems but not with just the T40's. In addition we have T23, T30, X series and A series and i don't think any of the 100 plus laptops we have that haven't been repaired at some point. One positive in having to service all these is that IBM's support is still very good, I get right through and usually have rma'd parts the following day.

I don't know what happened to the quality of laptops the last couple years, it seems that everyone gave up quality to get lighter weight machines. Pretty sad.

a little teflon coating on the bottom would make them really expensive hockey pucks :)

You can always sell the Thinkpad and get a Sony U1, U3, or U101.

One positive in having to service all these is that IBM's support is still very good, I get right through and usually have rma'd parts the following day.

I've called after 12:00 and the replacement is in before I get into the office next day.
