Since you're from Europe, you're probably less scared of public transit than most Americans.

I once went scuba diving in Thailand and the guy I partnered up with there lived a mile from me here in the States. You never know who you'll meet when traveling.

If you just so happen to want to eat while you are in Vegas (though I think that most people just imbibe alcohol) I would recommend Freemont street for inexpensive steak/buffet/shrimp.

I've met people from all over the world at DEFCON. However, many of the attendees are from California since Los Angeles is only 4 hours by car. Me, I'm not from California. Don't believe what you've been told! We Americans are a friendly lot. Come and see for yourself!

Well obviously, most are going to be from the US, simply because it's cheaper for us to get there than for y'all to come over. Still, there are a good number of Europeans who attend each year, including a large group from Germany and several staff members from the UK.

Staying downtown is an affordable option (if you have a car)

The rooms in the area of the conference are not particularly cheap. The cheap rooms in Las Vegas are either on the strip from Sunday - Thursday (room rates in Las Vegas go up steeply on weekends), or downtown. So, if you don’t have a car, you will want to stay at either the Alexis Park, St. Tropez or the Amerisuites. Don’t forget that summer temperatures in Las Vegas can exceed 112 degrees, so don’t expect to walk for any distance—not comfortable or recommended.

Downtown is not as flashy as the strip, but is still hip. If you stay downtown you will need a car because downtown is probably 7 or 10 miles from the conference. You can rent a car in the United States if you are licensed to drive in your home country, are over 25 and have a major credit card. You can rent a car in Las Vegas for as little as $12-$15 a day. Las Vegas is an easy town to drive in, but the parking around the Alexis Park is difficult--expect to park at the Hard Rock and walk a few blocks.

I like staying downtown because you can usually find a very nice room in the casino district (on Fremont) for around $50 on weekends and closer to $35 during the week. If you do stay downtown, I don’t recommend any of the following for a new visitor: The Western, The Gold Spike (one of my personal favorites) or The El Cortez. I’d suggest something like The Las Vegas Club, The Plaza, The Fremont, The Horseshoe or Lady Luck for cheap rooms.

Having said all that, this year I will stay either at the Flamingo (my new favorite) or Alexis Park.

For a fair and accurate description of hotels in Las Vegas check http://cheapovegas.com. They only critique hotels with casinos, however, so you won’t find the Alexis Park, St. Tropez or Amerisuites in their lists.

Lastly, you cannot beat the Alexis Park for the true DEFCON experience! Maybe you can find someone to share a room with at the Alexis Park? Check the ride/room sharing thread that appear closer to the conference.

The St. Tropez and the Amerisuites are both close and fairly cheap.
