  • Defcon Radio

Ok, I'm starting earlier this year. I need assistance in the following areas:

Relay networks: I have 45M i can use over the weekend for those who want to listen online, but if there are others with a machine we can setup an icecast relay on let me know (Might even consider making this a perminant stream if we can find several relays!)

Hi-Rise hotel room with internet access and a balcony (preferably facing wherever con is, but at least within 3-5 miles) and in space from thursday -> sunday afternoon (friday OK, but thursday is better)

DJ's: Both the kind who mix and the kind who can be personalities (You don't have to be @ con! If you have a favorite DJ, get your stuff to me and we'll play it!)

Graphics Person: We need to look better. I can hack code, but i'm graphically disabled

People who are willing to send .wav, .mp3 or .ogg comments in to share with everyone

I will have new site up in about a month that will let people start voting on what they want and start lining up interviews with potential con speakers. So if you presentation was denied stop by our boot @ con and we'll get you your 15-60 minutes of fame (if you have a great hack we're not going to stop you from talking:)

I had some great DJs stop by last year, and if we're able to get the booth again this year then I think we'll have some fun again this year!

Antenna? Stick it on the end of that Hard Rock guitar. Then maybe someone will finally put the damn thing to good use.

That will work great right up until a prison-transport plane crashes through the damn thing, which is not all that unlikely over the Defcon weekend...

        Antenna on guitar

Plenty of power to run it, problem is I don't have any experience climbing such a thing to mount it.

Any mountian climbers here who are comfortable plugging into a vegas strip sign for power?

Sounds like it would make a good movie scene.

That'll be Humperdink making his grand entrance.

I'm more of the yakking type, but would be happy to help on this front. Also, something we were thinking of doing for DCR in the past that never came to light, but might work: a phone-in. Dunno if you're down with this idea, but I think it could be done.

On a more serious note, I'll be happy to help in that department. I might not be a grade-A photoshop guru, but I get the job done pretty well. I can also offer hosting, if needed.

PS: DMZ, it was good hanging out with you at Quarks last year. If I recall correctly, without your help I would have been really really lost at that hotel. I couldn't even find the lobby.

Ok this is good, check out the email I got:

                  Subject: Notice of copyright infringement
                  see www.defconradio.com

                  -----

I see they started in 10/04, so I wonder how I can be doing something for 4 years then all of a sudden be in copyright infringement; especially since the Defcon name is in association with another group and has been going on for way longer!

More to come if I get any response back from the email I sent them. Who knows, they are a comedy station, maybe it's all just a joke!

Get in touch, lets talk about what you need and how we can put this together.

In the West, even if you have an example of a pre-existing work, it is not, "who it in the right" but instead "who cannot afford to go the distance with lawyer's fees" and then it is a matter of who can afford the better lawyers.

You could sue them in small claims court and bring in witnesses to provide proof of pre-existing work, and then when you win that simple lawsuit, any suit they would bring against you might allow you to get access to counter sue them for frivilous lawsuit. :-)

                      Of course, IANAL.

What copyright are they saying you infringed upon? As far as I can tell, the linked web site shares no content with our Defcon radio.

If they really meant a trademark violation, then you can be pretty sure a lawyer didn't send that letter. The fact that it was sent by email should have been the first red flag.

                        I call bullshit.

                          <cough>Bullshit!<cough>

If anything, it they might possibly have a trademark infringement case, but since you haven't used any materials from their site (or something else sourced to them) it cannot be copyright infringement. If they do own the trademark/trademame on the name "Defcon Radio", they might possibly have some case. But if they can't tell the difference between copyright and trademark/tradename infringement, they're getting legal advice from the firm of Dewey, Cheatem and Howe.
