Richard Garriott? I'm probably spelling it wrong...big RPG guy whose handle is Lord British.

That was my first thought, as well. However, I don't see the similarity, and I would be surprised if they put him in with such famour pioneers of the computer industry.

I posted this on the jinx forum as well, thus far no hits....starting to wonder if anyone knows.....the truth is out there, that rpg guy i guess is cool, but to put him next to the lee and woz is just wrong. I reviewed the guy, sure he has done some cool stuff, but why not like linus or babbage or something.

Linus is too new to be an "OG", and I'd say Babbage came too early for the time of geeks.

In keeping with the theme of bringing computers to the masses, I would nominate Alan Kay as an original geek. I would have said Vincent Cerf or Alan Turing would work, but they are more "behind the scenes" people.

I was actually just talking about this with Jason Scott, the textfiles.com and bbs documentary guy, and he says it's Lord British. So I think I'll trust him on that.

Yeah, I can think of about a million people I'd use before Richard Garriott...

                  How about:
                  Ken Thompson
                  Dennis Ritchie
                  Brian Kernighan
                  Don Knuth
                  Ken Olsen
                  Fred Brooks

                  ...to name a few

Yes. These are Nerds. Geeks are "misfits." From the dictionary, geeks were people in carnivals who performed acts like biting the head off of live chickens (For Profit!)

Nerds are people who learn stuff.

Being in group "nerds" and group "geeks" are not mutually exclusive.and entry in on group does not mean automatic entry in the other.

Here is a trick question... Are hippies more like nerds or geeks? ]:>
